Medicine Science ? Can Fish Oil Prevent Skin Cancer?

?

A British research team suspects it can. The theory is that fish oil can protect?us from the damaging effect of ultraviolet radiation in sunlight by bolstering the activity of the immune system in the skin. UV light can lead to melanoma and other cancers by suppressing the immune system in skin, preventing it from detecting and killing off malignant cells before they form a tumor. The team, at the University of Manchester, is recruiting 60 women to test whether fish oil can boost the immune system in the skin so that it doesn?t yield to cancer-promoting UV light. Earlier animal studies showed that supplementation withomega 3s?did protect against skin cancer by preventing immune system suppression by UV radiation. Omega 3 fatty acids can lower triglyceride levels, increase HDL cholesterol, help minimize inflammation and blood clotting, and keep blood vessels healthy. Evidence also suggests that fish oil reduces the risk of cancer in general and enhances mood.?Omega 3s?are found primarily in oily fish that live in deep, cold water, such as salmon, mackerel, black cod, sardines, and herring.
