The Dell Inspiron One 23 is an adequate all-in-one desktop PC; what sets it apart is an extraordinary set of input ports. If you have a need for composite AV in and VGA in on a touch screen all-in-one desktop, the Inspiron One 23 should be on the top of the list. If you don't need this admittedly specialized set of inputs, then there are other more attractive AIO PC choices out there for the same amount of money.
Design and Features
Every so often we get a system that seems specialized to cater to people still using older technologies, and this time around it's the Inspiron One 23. At first glance, though, the Inspiron One 23 looks like a modern Windows 8 all-in-one desktop PC with a 23-inch 1080p touch screen. Dig a little deeper, and you'll see a lot of old-school inputs that will allow you to connect older tech to this 2012-2013 model. The back panel houses composite AV input for video and audio, a S/PDIF connector for digital audio out, both VGA in and VGA out, and in a concession to modern times, a HDMI-in port. Using the various inputs you can connect older PCs, VCRs, sound bar speaker systems, along with vintage and modern game consoles. The presence of all these ports can help people holding on to these older technologies accept the new while still supporting legacy devices. It also gives the space-constrained tech fan a screen that can display older video formats while standing firmly in the modern era.
Speaking of older tech, the system comes with a DVD burner, but no Blu-ray. The latter would make more sense on a 1080p screen like the one on the Inspiron One 23. If you have a Playstation 3, however, that would cover Blu-ray when connected to the HDMI-in port. A row of buttons on the right side of the system lets you control which input is active. VGA-out is a nice touch, but this would only work for multi-monitor use if you have an older VGA monitor lying around. Some newer monitors only come with DisplayPort, HDMI, or DVI.
The system's 1080p (1,920 by 1,080) resolution 23-inch panel has 10-finger capacitive touch input, so you can use both hands or share the screen with someone sitting next to you. The single-hinge-and-arm design of the system lets you tilt the screen a bit, but the arm lacks a height adjustment that would give you the most flexibility for standing or reclining users. All in all the screen works fine for part time touch use. The screen itself is a little darker and duller than others we've seen in this price range, including the Editors' Choice Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Late 2012) ($1,199) and the Sony VAIO Tap 20 ($999.99). While the differences are mainly visible in a side-by-side comparison, colors on the Start screen's live tiles don't seem to "pop" like they do on systems like the Vizio 24-Inch All-in-One (CA24T-A4) ($1,299).
In addition to all the video-oriented ports, the Inspiron One 23 comes with four USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. The USB 2.0 ports work best for peripherals like printers, keyboards, and mice. You'll have to be a bit vigilant, however, as Dell doesn't provide a way to visually distinguish between the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. The USB 3.0 ports are the same color as the USB 2.0 ports, so you'll have to use your keen eyesight to find the ones marked with the USB SS logo for USB 3.0 speeds. Not a huge deal, but you may inadvertently plug a USB 3.0 device into the slower USB 2.0 port. Systems like the Vizio CA24T-A4 solely use USB 3.0 ports, so there's no confusion.
The Inspiron One 23 comes with a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, and a 1TB hard drive. The amount of memory will help for multitasking to your heart's content, not worrying if you have 50 opened tabs in your browser. Likewise, the Core i5 processor helps with multitasking and taking care of multimedia tasks (see performance below).
The 1TB is a decent amount of drive space for a student or family, and you can add external storage with the system's speedy USB 3.0 ports. The two ports on the left side of the system are more convenient to get to than the ones in the back. There were a few added tiles on the Inspiron One 23's Start screen, including Amazon, Kindle, Skype, Dell Shop, eBay, and Movie Maker. The actual desktop mode was pretty free of third-party programs, except for a shortcut to Amazon in the task bar. The desktop comes with a 15-month subscription to McAfee Security Center, a plus. It comes with a standard one-year warranty including in home service.
Performance
The combination of the Intel Core i5-3330S processor with Intel integrated graphics and 8GB of memory helped the Inspiron One 23 perform day-to-day tasks about as fast as systems with Core i7 processors like the Toshiba LX835-D3380 ($1,399) and the pricier HP Spectre One 23-e010se ($1,610), as shown by their similar PCMark7 results. The Toshiba LX835 and HP One 23 both outperform the Inspiron One 23 on the multimedia tests (Handbrake and Photoshop CS6), but it's not a rout, as the Dell remains competitive there. The Inspiron One 23 stumbled in 3D performance tests. Its low 3DMark 11 and gaming test numbers show that you'd get a better gaming experience by hooking up a console to the HDMI-in port. Basically, if you're not going planning to compete on the PC game grid, the Inspiron One 23 is fine on all other fronts.
The Dell Inspiron One 23 performs adequately, but has a very good set of ports for connectivity to a plethora of devices. Aside from that niche market, however, other competitors in the cutthroat mainstream all-in-one field overshadow the Inspiron One 23. Both the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Late 2012) (our Editors' Choice for mainstream all-in-one PCs) and Vizio A24T-A4 have better, brighter screens than the Inspiron One 23. The Toshiba LX835-D3380 and iMac are better overall performers on the multimedia and 3D fronts. If you don't need VGA and AV in, there are other mainstream all-in-ones that should be on the top of your buying list.

Acceptable approach when delivering cover letter, resume, etc. in person?
I'm applying for my first graphic design job outside of free-lancing. I plan on printing my resume on a thick card stock, but should I also do that with my cover letter? That would seem a little tacky handing two thick pieces of paper, so should I print the cover letter on normal paper and the resume on card stock?Furthermore, what is the most accepted way to deliver this content? Stapling them would seem unprofessional. Paper clipping could be better, but I'm hoping the cover letter doesn't get lost with the resume. Beyond that, I don't know any other way.
I also have a business card I designed for contact convenience, but I'm not sure if I should attach that with the cover letter and resume. Perhaps it would be better to save the business card as a takeaway for an interview?
What do you all recommend?

INDIANAPOLIS ? Predawn storms that raked Indiana on Wednesday spawned two small tornadoes and destructive winds, uprooting trees, downing power lines and flattening barns and other structures.
An EF1 tornado with winds of 85-95 mph damaged the roof and porch of an Orange County home near West Baden Springs, about 50 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky, The National Weather Service confirmed. The tornado traveled 400 yards.
The weather service also confirmed that an EF0 tornado packing winds of up to 80 mph cut a half-mile track in the Harrison County town of Elizabeth, across the Ohio River from Louisville.
Elizabeth resident Teresa Campbell told WLKY-TV that the twister heavily damaged a barn and old schoolhouse on her property and stripped shingles from her home.
"Things were flying, you could hear it and it sounded like a big suction, like a vacuum just sucking," she said.
Near the Castleton area of Indianapolis, four large pine trees lie sprawled atop the home of Charles Winternheimer.
"It could have been worse," the 82-year-old Navy veteran told The Indianapolis Star. "I could have been sitting on the commode upstairs reading the newspaper. That's right where a big limb punched right through the roof."
In Greene County west of Bloomington, Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Axe said 15-20 homes in the Solsberry area sustained moderate to severe damage. The weather service blamed straight-line winds of about 70 mph.
The weather service said straight-line winds of 70-75 mph also hit near the southern Indiana city of Salem, imploding the roof of a double-wide mobile home.
Before the storms arrived, Indianapolis had set a record high for the date of 65 and Fort Wayne had a record high of 64, the weather service said. South Bend had record rainfall of 1.94 inches for the date Tuesday.

In an effort to counter the negative stereotypes that African-American men experience and are subjected to on a daily basis - being criminal, irresponsible and deadbeat fathers, to name a few - filmmaker Jordan Thierry set out on a mission of research and documentation.
Although 70% of black children are born into single parent households, Thierry hadn?t seen anything that explained why. Once he began to delve into research and to do a series of interviews, he found out why certain stereotypes exist and was able to put them, and the root of the problem, into proper historical context.
On Thursday, Jan. 31, Thierry's findings - now the documentary "The Black Fatherhood Project" - will debut at 6 p.m. at the Grand Lake Theater.
The systematic break up of the black family started during the slave trade in Africa when families were ripped apart through brutal kidnappings, then through chattel slavery, KKK terrorism, Jim Crow, job discrimination, drug saturation on down to the prison industrial complex. The generational cycle of the black family break up persisted and continued for at least 200 years. Every generation has been attacked and broken; lost from knowledge of self and of the ways of its ancestors. What was fatherhood like in traditional African society? What did that role look like? What did it mean? Without romanticizing Africa or African traditions, Thierry felt that there were good things that could be pulled from that wealth of knowledge, in order to deal with the challenges faced by the African-American community today.
The film moves chronologically through time discussing what has continued to undermine the black family to keep it from flourishing and thriving. The second piece of film is a series of interviews with African-American men on what fatherhood means to them.
The Black Fatherhood Project is intended to spark dialog among community members to address issues being discussed in the film in their respective communities; to inspire growth and personal change in order for folks to step up to be mentors and role models, and to motivate those in politics to address structural barriers that challenge low income families of color.
The film also will be made free and accessible on-line.
This is a free film screening, however folks are strongly encouraged to RSVP HERE. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door.

All you have to do is to write a book with 20 to 250 pages about anything you would like to write. You could research on topics that interests more people or you could depend on topics that you may be interested in. Who knows; there are millions of people looking of a valuable book which only you can write. And if you think you writing is not your line but you want to enter into this kind of venture, you can still do so simply by hiring a writer who can write the book for you. It may cost you a little to pay your writer for his effort, but once that effort pays off, you will start earning money every time there is someone who wants to purchase your book; and this will go on as long as there are people buying your books. With a little effort of trying to make a book, the amount of money that you can earn is insurmountable by the time people are starting to get interested in your book.
The price of the e-book varies in a number of factors?the length of the contents, the number of pages, the design and effort to layout the book, the uniqueness of the contents, as well as the demand of the readers. If it is truly an in-demand topic, you can increase the price tag of your book. However, if it is only a 20 to 100 page book, then you should make a very reasonable price for it. But, there?s a catch. If you keep your price lower and your book truly interests people, there is no doubt that the book could be a bestselling. It?s all in the matter of choosing the perfect topic to write.

Jan. 28, 2013 ? If findings of a new study in mice are any indication, it might be possible to fine-tune cellular powerhouses called mitochondria, tweaking one aspect to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce body and fat mass, and even extend life. Exploiting this target could one day lead to novel treatments for type 2 diabetes -- an endocrine system disease that affects 8 percent of the U.S. population. The research also points to promising new avenues of investigation in the biology of aging.
The study, reported in The FASEB Journal by authors from the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and the university's Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, found that diminished activity of a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function was associated with healthy changes in the mice. The median life span of this strain of mice is 20 percent longer.
Paradoxical
"This is an unexpected finding because you would think that something that decreases mitochondrial function would have a damaging effect, but instead we saw an increase in life span and beneficial metabolic effects," said lead author Deepa Sathyaseelan, Ph.D., research assistant professor of cellular and structural biology in the School of Medicine.
"The most important thing we noticed is reduced body weight and decreased fat mass in the mice," Dr. Sathyaseelan said. "We found that this decreased fat mass is due to increased fat utilization."
Fat utilization
Mitochondria produce an energy source called ATP that is necessary for the functions of life, everything from breathing to thinking. Additionally the cellular powerhouses are a major site of fat utilization, said study senior author Holly Van Remmen, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology. Fat is an endocrine organ that performs many functions, and having it in the correct proportions is important for the body. Too much or too little fat is harmful.
The scientists also observed that mice with the mutation, in contrast to control animals, make greater numbers of new mitochondria. This is important because cells are constantly remodeling themselves, including mitochondrial overhaul.
Age-related
Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs with age and is associated with many age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Dr. Sathyaseelan said the study "opens the door to new clues about how mitochondrial function might modulate insulin sensitivity," representing an important step for diabetes research.
Type 2 diabetes involves abnormalities with insulin, a hormone secreted by beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body store and use sugar from food, but in type 2 diabetes the body is insulin resistant, that is, it inefficiently responds to the hormone. With time the beta cells in diabetic patients start to die, resulting in less insulin to handle the demands. Levels of the hormone become progressively lower and sugar levels are increased progressively, damaging blood vessels and organs.
Understanding longevity
"I would also like to point out that these mice live longer," Dr. Van Remmen said. "For us they are very important from an aging standpoint. We want to understand how these animals can have added longevity, yet have a 60 percent reduction in a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function."
Dr. Sathyaseelan noted that life extension in association with decrease of the complex's activity is seen across species, including roundworms and flies. Shane Rea, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Barshop Institute, is one of the first to make this discovery in the worms.
The Barshop Institute team obtained the study mice from an Italian institute where studies are ongoing. Dr. Sathyaseelan recently received a two-year, $140,000 grant from the American Heart Association to understand how mitochondrial dysfunction is related to insulin sensitivity.

Brad Pitt, left, and SAG Award winner Ben Affleck.
By Erin O?Sullivan, Access Hollywood
Jennifer Garner may be stunningly attractive, but her husband, Ben Affleck, recently admitted she?s got some competition -- in the form of Brad Pitt.
Access Hollywood caught up with the ?Argo? star/director at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday to get the details on his ?crush? on Brad.

And his admiration for Brad isn?t strictly confined to the ?World War Z? actor?s professional talents.
?I love the way he looks, I?m not going to lie! I think he?s awesome,? Ben raved. ?If I could be somebody, it?d definitely be Brad Pitt.?
All joking aside, Ben -- whose ?Argo? ensemble took home the award for outstanding performance by a motion picture cast at the SAG event -- said he was thrilled to be at the awards with his gorgeous, helpful wife.

?She?s the most beautiful woman out there,? he said of Jen (who was walking the red carpet), adding that he was very grateful she was on hand at the Golden Globes two weeks ago to thank ?Argo? producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov after he failed to mention them in an acceptance speech.

There is no doubt that one of the essential traits needed for effective and meaningful leadership is the ability to motivate. However, as essential as being a motivator is, unless someone in a position of leadership can translate that motivation, and use it as a weapon in his arsenal of addressing needs by taking timely action, the motivation will ultimately go for naught, because followers will lose their patience and allegiance unless they see results. On the other hand, while there are administrative actions and needs in leadership, merely being an administrator makes one a manager, and not a leader. True leaders combine motivation with action to transform dreams and goals, into the actions needed to become reality. After more than three decades of professionally consulting to well over a thousand leaders, I fully realize that motivation and administration on duties performed by leaders, but that only when the emphasis is on focusing on an organization's mission, its present and future needs, and society as a whole, can someone take the steps to right the ship, and evolve an organization to become most relevant, and therefore, most sustainable.
1. If someone spends most of his time on administration, he is simply not a real leader. While it is important to act responsibly in this area, and assure that systems are in place for optimum performance and implementation, most aspects of administration are best suited for a manager, and not a leader. While the rare and most effective manager is often a fine leader, in most situations, managers often lack the creativity, motivational skills, and vision required of an effective and great leader. On the other hand, if someone merely motivates, he is probably not going to be a great leader, either. Motivation without implementation is like having an appetite but satisfying it with far less than an exquisite meal. While it is essential for a great leader to also be a fabulous motivator, he must use that motivation to get followers to buy into his vision, and direct them to taking needed actions in a timely manner.
2. The true test of the great leader is not what he says, nor is how well he can handle paperwork, etc., but rather how well he can focus on the big picture, and the true needs of his organization. That means that a real leader, while he must be able and willing to motivate others, must understand that it will lead nowhere unless accompanied with both a plan, and the willingness to take timely action, whether it is popular or against the popular tide, if he feels strongly that his action is a vital one. Great leaders follow their vision and lead others towards achievement of a mission, by setting goals, motivating others to follow, and developing a plan of action.
If you just want to motivate, become a coach. If you are only interested in the details, become a manager or supervisor. However, if you want to be a leader, you must conceptualize, have a vision and goals, motivate others, and be willing to take timely action.

Finally.?Today the Senate will vote on ? and likely pass ? the Hurricane Sandy relief bill that allocates over $50 billion toward victims of, and infrastructure damaged by, the superstorm three months ago. The bill's passage would end the months-long drama that began with President Obama's request for $60 billion in federal aid and later intensified when House Republicans repeatedly delayed the bill in hopes of trimming its expenditures, an unpopular strategy that drew?the very public rebuke of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, parts of whose state were ravaged by Sandy.
RELATED: The Most Unbelievable but Real Pictures of Sandy's Destruction
Given the Democratic-controlled Senate's support for past iterations of a similar bill, we're probably not going to see much of a fight in today's vote. But that doesn't mean the Senate itself is immune to delay tactics. Indeed, the body is voting only now ? two weeks after the House passed the same bill?? due to the drawn-out fight?over filibuster reform that forced Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to debate Senate procedure instead of actual legislation. Once it passes, however, the bill should shuttle quickly to the White House, where President Obama is certain to sign.

The real fight will continue on the sidelines, where think tanks like the Heritage Foundation will continue to criticize what they perceive to be unnecessary funds (even when they're totally appropriate), and produce apocalyptic videos such as the one below:

Skin cancer sucks, even in its mildest early stages. Between doctor visits, ointments, creams and cutting, there's nothing to like about it except for the fact that it's not brain or liver cancer. But you know what would suck even more? Skin cancer with no insurance.
I've been lucky. I was able to see a doctor early and often, staying ahead of the disease. Without insurance, I might be well my way to dead right now.
More than 1.5 million adults in North Carolina have no health insurance. With an incidence rate of 30% for skin cancer, that means more than 450,000 uninsured citizens would be diagnosed if they somehow managed to see a doctor. But they won't see a doctor. They can't afford to.
The Republicans in Raleigh don't give a damn about people who can't afford to see a doctor. Just like they don't give a damn about people who have lost their jobs.

Whether you are about to retire or still years away from it, planning for a good future should be a part of your plan. Let?s be honest, getting old is inescapable. Retirement will always be a part of living. What?s important is the way you were able to invest for your future.
Gold assets don?t rely on the performance of a specific entity for its market value to stay high, not like stocks, which fluctuate regularly, and hence don?t offer true economic security. Buying gold has become a trend among retirees since it has stable value.
Be sure though that the gold to be used in gold IRA is 99.5% in fineness, and must be considered a lawful mode of exchange. One particular gold coin that is eligible for Individual Retirement Account is the American Buffalo.
Turning a traditional IRA into the gold IRA isn?t as complicated as many people imagine. An employee who is of the age of retirement should first become terminated from his job to accomplish the Individual Retirement Account transfer of his 401k.
Pre-existing Individual Retirement Accounts with bank accounts can be rolled over to trusted gold firms. To find out more about Individual Retirement Account transfers, it is better to contact your chosen company for a phone appointment. They can make important arrangements to make the rollover a lot easier.
Investing in gold in the retirement plan is definitely a smart move. And professional advice is needed so as to make the best out of it. To learn more, please visit Here

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin said Saturday he will not seek a sixth term in 2014, a decision that frees a new generation of Iowa Democrats to seek higher office and eases some of the burden Republicans face in retaking the Senate.
Harkin, chairman of an influential Senate committee, announced his decision during an interview with The Associated Press, and said the move could surprise some.
But the 73-year-old cited his age ? he would be 81 at the end of a sixth term ? as a factor in the decision, saying it was time to pass the torch he has held for nearly 30 years.
"I just think it's time for me to step aside," Harkin told the AP.
Harkin, first elected in 1984, ranks 7th in seniority, and 4th among majority Democrats. He is chairman of the health, education, labor and pensions committee, and chairman of the largest appropriations subcommittee.
Harkin has long aligned with the Senate's more liberal members, and his signature legislative accomplishment is the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. He also served as a key salesman of President Barack Obama's 2010 health care bill to the wary left.
"I'm not saying that giving this up and walking away is easy. It's very tough," Harkin said at his rural Iowa home south of Des Moines. "But I'm not quitting today. I'm not passing the torch sitting down."
Harkin's news defied outward signals. Besides being beloved in his party, Harkin has $2.7 million in his campaign war chest, second most among members nearing the end of their terms, and was planning a gala fundraiser in Washington, D.C., next month featuring pop star Lady Gaga.
Although members of his family have been diagnosed with cancer, Harkin said his health is good ? and reported a recent positive colonoscopy. But he said "you never know," and that he wanted to travel and spend his retirement with his wife Ruth "before it's too late."
He also nodded to his political longevity: "The effect of that cascades down and it opens a lot of doors of opportunity" for future candidates, he said.
Indeed, the news creates a rare open Senate seat Iowa. Harkin, Iowa's junior senator, is outranked by Sen. Charles Grassley, who has held the state's other seat since 1980.
Attention will turn immediately to U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a fourth-term Democrat from Waterloo, long mentioned as a possible Harkin successor. Braley, who was traveling in Iowa on Saturday, did not immediately return requests by the AP for comments beyond an emailed news statement calling Harkin a "mentor" and "progressive force" who leaves "a legacy few will ever match."
Harkin held open the possibility of endorsing a Democrat before the party's primary if the candidate fit the profile of "someone who is progressive, who is a pragmatic progressive."
Although no Republicans have stepped forward, Harkin's news gives the GOP's private huddles new life.
"There are lots of conversations, but it's very early still," said Nick Ryan, an Iowa Republican campaign fundraiser.
U.S. Rep. Tom Latham of Clive is a seasoned Republican congressman, a veteran appropriations committee member and a robust fundraiser who has survived challenges to win 10 consecutive terms. Aides to Latham declined to comment beyond issuing a statement saying the congressman "respects Sen. Harkin's decision (and) looks forward to continuing to work with him."
But with opening a door in Iowa, Harkin has created a potential headache for his party nationally.
Democrats likely would have had the edge in 2014 with the seat, considering Harkin's fundraising prowess and healthy approval. A poll by the Des Moines Register taken last fall showed a majority of Iowans approved of his job performance.
Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage in the Senate, requiring Republicans to gain six seats to win back the chamber. But Democrats have more seats to defend in 2014_20 compared to only 13 for Republicans.
And the president's party historically loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election.
Seats in other states will be tough for Democrats to hold onto. In GOP-leaning West Virginia, five-term Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller recently announced he would not seek re-election.
Democratic incumbents also face tough re-election races in Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina and Alaska ? all states carried by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in November's presidential election.
Since then, Harkin has stepped up his role as one of the Senate's leading liberal populists.
He was a vocal opponent late last year of President Barack Obama's concession to lift the income threshold for higher taxes to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. Harkin instead supported raising taxes on all earners making more than $250,000 a year.
He also endorsed Obama's call for banning assault rifles and larger ammunition magazines in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting last month
Despite Harkin's strong political position, he has faced questions about his and his wife Ruth's role in developing a namesake policy institute at Iowa State University, Harkin's alma mater. The Harkins and their supporters have been pushing for the institute to house papers highlighting his signature achievements, including the ADA and shaping farm policy as the former chairman of the agriculture committee.
Harkin has avoided questions about fundraising for the institute after disclosure reports showed some of its largest donors are firms that have benefited from his policies.
Harkin dismissed that those questions had any bearing on his decision.

2nd Story Software has had the distinction over the last several years of being the only personal income tax-prep provider that offers a free version that is the same as its paid version in terms of actual tax preparation tools. The free version of TaxACT Deluxe Online only lacks some found extras found in the paid version, such as an import tool, donation tracker, and calculators (none of which I even used in my evaluation). But if you don't need to file a state return, you can prepare and print or e-file your IRS 1040 forms and schedules absolutely free.
It's for this reason that I said last year and will say again this year: The TaxACT site should be your first stop when you're getting ready to endure your annual tax ordeal. Jump to the topics that you think are the most complex in your return and see how the site handles them. If the forms you need are supported?TaxACT includes all of the most common and many that are used less frequently?and the depth of guidance is acceptable, you don't have to look any further.
Lest you think this is a gimmick designed to market a lot of other products and services to you, or that TaxACT is a second-rate site published by a fly-by-night company, know that it's neither. TaxACT has been around for as long as its competitors, though in its earlier years it was known as Personal TaxEdge and published by a different company (some of the principals moved forward with the product and kept it going under a new name). There's no catch. TaxACT Deluxe Online is a solid rival for the other sites reviewed here. It just happens to be free.
Almost a Carbon Copy
Like its competitors, TaxACT looks and works much like the 2011 version did, with one big difference: TaxTutor Guidance, which comes from renowned tax resource J.K. Lasser, has been rewritten to be clearer and simpler. This was one of TaxACT's weaknesses, so the change was welcome. Beyond that, the company is now offering an audit insurance plan ? similar to competitors' ? for $39.95. And 2nd Story Software is branching out a bit; it will produce an inexpensive service for creating your own will.
TaxACT Deluxe Online does practically everything TurboTax Deluxe Online?and H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online?do. Besides supporting a comparable number of forms and schedules and incorporating new tax laws since last year, it walks you through an interview-like process ("Q&A") rather than making you enter data on IRS documents. It asks you simple, clear questions about everything that needs to be on those official forms. There are often several questions on each screen, and you simply enter information in fields or select options from lists or check boxes to answer them.
You advance forward and backward by clicking buttons. TaxACT doesn't force you to complete the screens in order like H&R Block At Home Deluxe Online does. And when you come across particularly complex topics, all of these sites offer the option of taking a more directed, simplified route.
In the background, TaxACT transfers those responses to the correct lines on the 1040 and its assorted forms and schedules. When you're done, TaxACT combs through your return and alerts you to anything that's missing or seems incorrect. After you've fixed anything necessary, what comes out when you click "Print" is the actual IRS forms filled out with the information you provided. You can also file your return electronically at no cost.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's president declared a state of emergency and curfew in three Suez Canal provinces hit hardest by a weekend wave of unrest that left more than 50 dead, using tactics of the ousted regime to get a grip on discontent over his Islamist policies and the slow pace of change.
Angry and almost screaming, Mohammed Morsi vowed in a televised address on Sunday night that he would not hesitate to take even more action to stem the latest eruption of violence across much of the country. But at the same time, he sought to reassure Egyptians that his latest moves would not plunge the country back into authoritarianism.
"There is no going back on freedom, democracy and the supremacy of the law," he said.
The worst violence this weekend was in the Mediterranean coastal city of Port Said, where seven people were killed on Sunday, pushing the toll for two days of clashes to at least 44. The unrest was sparked on Saturday by a court conviction and death sentence for 21 defendants involved in a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium on Feb. 1, 2012 that left 74 dead.
Most of those sentenced to death were local soccer fans from Port Said, deepening a sense of persecution that Port Said's residents have felt since the stadium disaster, the worst soccer violence ever in Egypt.
At least another 11 died on Friday elsewhere in the country during rallies marking the second anniversary of the anti-Mubarak uprising. Protesters used the occasion to renounce Morsi and his Islamic fundamentalist group, the Muslim Brotherhood, which emerged as the country's most dominant political force after Mubarak's ouster.
The curfew and state of emergency, both in force for 30 days, affect the provinces of Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez. The curfew takes effect Monday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day.
Morsi, in office since June, also invited the nation's political forces to a dialogue starting Monday to resolve the country's latest crisis. A statement issued later by his office said that among those invited were the country's top reform leader, Nobel peace Laureate Mohammed ElBaradei, former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist politician who finished third in last year's presidential race.
The three are leaders of the National Salvation Front, an umbrella for the main opposition parties.
Khaled Dawoud, the Front's spokesman, said Morsi's invitation was meaningless unless he clearly states what is on the agenda. That, he added, must include amending a disputed constitution hurriedly drafted by the president's Islamist allies and rejected by the opposition.
He also faulted the president for not acknowledging his political responsibility for the latest bout of political violence.
"It is all too little too late," he told The Associated Press.
In many ways, Morsi's decree and his call for a dialogue betrayed his despair in the face of wave after wave of political unrest, violence and man-made disasters that, at times, made the country look like it was about to come unglued.
A relative unknown until his Muslim Brotherhood nominated him to run for president last year, Morsi is widely criticized for having offered no vision for the country's future after nearly 30 years of dictatorship under Mubarak and no coherent policy to tackle seemingly endless problems, from a free falling economy and deeply entrenched social injustices to surging crime and chaos on the streets.
Reform of the judiciary and the police, hated under the old regime for brutality, are also key demands of Morsi's critics.
Morsi did not say what he plans to do to stem the violence in other parts of the country outside those three provinces, but he did say he had instructed the police to deal "firmly and forcefully" with individuals attacking state institutions, using firearms to "terrorize" citizens or blocking roads and railway lines.
There were also clashes Sunday in Cairo and several cities in the Nile Delta region, including the industrial city of Mahallah.
Egypt's current crisis is the second to hit the country since November, when Morsi issued decrees, since rescinded, that gave him nearly unlimited powers and placed him above any oversight, including by the judiciary.
The latest eruption of political violence has deepened the malaise as Morsi struggles to get a grip on enormous social and economic problems and the increasingly dangerous fault lines that divide this nation of 85 million.
In an ominous sign, a one-time jihadist group on Sunday blamed the secular opposition for the violence and threatened to set up vigilante militias to defend the government it supports.
Addressing a news conference, Tareq el-Zomr of the once-jihadist Gamaa Islamiya, said:
"If security forces don't achieve security, it will be the right of the Egyptian people and we at the forefront to set up popular committees to protect private and public property and counter the aggression on innocent citizens."
His threat was accompanied by his charge that the opposition was responsible for the deadly violence of the past few days, setting the stage for possible bloody clashes between protesters and Islamist militiamen. The opposition denies the charge.
In Port Said on Sunday, tens of thousands of mourners poured into the streets for a mass funeral for most of the 37 people who died on Saturday. They chanted slogans against Morsi.
"We are now dead against Morsi," said Port Said activist Amira Alfy. "We will not rest now until he goes and we will not take part in the next parliamentary elections. Port Said has risen and will not allow even a semblance of normalcy to come back," she said.
The violence flared only a month after a prolonged crisis ? punctuated by deadly violence ? over the new constitution. Ten died in that round of unrest and hundreds were injured.
In Port Said, mourners chanted "There is no God but Allah," and "Morsi is God's enemy" as the funeral procession made its way through the city after prayers for the dead at the city's Mariam Mosque. Women clad in black led the chants, which were quickly picked up by the rest of the mourners.
There were no police or army troops in sight. But the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. Security officials said the gunfire came from several mourners who opened fire at the Police Club next to the cemetery. Activists, however, said the gunfire first came from inside the army club, which is also close to the cemetery. Some of the mourners returned fire, which drew more shots as well as tear gas, according to witnesses. They, together with the officials, spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation in the city on the Mediterranean at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.
A total of 630 people were injured, some of them with gunshot wounds, said Abdel-Rahman Farag, director of the city's hospitals.
Also Sunday, army troops backed by armored vehicles staked out positions at key government facilities to protect state interests and try to restore order.
There was also a funeral in Cairo for two policemen killed in the Port Said violence a day earlier. Several policemen grieving for their colleagues heckled Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the force, when he arrived for their funeral, according to witnesses.
The angry officers screamed at the minister that he was only at the funeral for the TV cameras ? a highly unusual show of dissent in Egypt, where the police force maintains military-like discipline.
Ibrahim hurriedly left and the funeral proceeded without him, a sign that the prestige of the state and its top executives were diminishing.
In Cairo, clashes broke out for the fourth straight day on Sunday, with protesters and police outside two landmark, Nile-side hotels near central Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising. Police fired tear gas while protesters pelted them with rocks.
