Earlier this week, a minivan that appears to be Ford Galaxy MPV was spotted testing the road of metropolitan Detroit. The Galaxy was redesigned last 2010, and this is perhaps what people are seeing on the images.

More Galaxy MPV Spy Shots

Prior to this, a Galaxy MPV mule was spotted last April in Germany, with speculations that the car manufacturer is working on a replacement for the said model.

Although still wearing some of the old skin, the car features visible changes, including wider track and changed nose. The latter is most likely to feature the same sort of Kinetic Design as the 2012 Focus and 2013 Escape or Fusion.

With the look of its twin exhaust and fuel filler cap that is sticking out, it looks like the spotted Ford Galaxy MPV is powered with a new powertrain. It could probably feature a 2.0-liter Ecoboost, detuned to about 240 hp. However, the rest of its powertrain lineup will be borrowed from the European Mondeo.

The Galaxy MPV has been in the market since 2006, and it received a facelift in 2009. With the mule being spotted once again, people could expect that Ford will launch the new model early next year.

Ford Lincoln Car in China

On another news, Ford announced last Tuesday that it will bring the Lincoln brand to China in 2014. Dubbed the company?s luxury brand, the Lincoln cars would be available in the last six months of 2014.

According to Dave Schoch, chairman and chief executive officer of Ford Motor China, ?With Lincoln, we will be expanding our product offering to cover China?s fastest-growing luxury car segment.?

Prior to this, Ford announced that it plans to bring 15 new vehicles to China after three years. However, the latest announcement came even as China?s auto sales decreased due to economic slow down. Furthermore, some Chinese cities limit the number of vehicles because they are concerned with congestion and pollution.

A Chinese industry group revealed that the country?s overall vehicle sales rose to 2.5 percent only last year, compared with its annual increase of over 32 percent in 2010. In relation to this, Ford was able to sell 319,882 units in China within the first seven months of this year. The automaker is also building five new plants in the country, which will double its production capacity to 1.2 million passenger vehicles every year.

As the world?s largest auto market, China has increasingly becoming important to foreign players like Ford.

Retailers report best sales growth since March

NEW YORK (AP) ? This summer, Americans were walking contradictions: They spent despite their escalating fears about the slow economic recovery and surging gas prices.

A group of 18 retailers ranging from discounter Target to club-operator Costco reported August sales on Thursday that rose 6 percent ? the industry's best performance since March ? according to trade group International Council of Shopping Centers. At the same time, the government released numbers showing that Americans spent in July at the fastest clip in five months.

The reports appear to show that what Americans say and do are two different things: The news comes two days after a private research firm said consumer confidence in August fell to its lowest level since November 2011 as Americans grew more concerned about the job market, business conditions and the overall economy.

"It shows some resilience among shoppers. Let's face it. There are a whole series of economic headwinds that they are fighting against," said Ken Perkins, president of Retail Metrics, a research firm. "The results show that the consumer isn't dead."

A small group of merchants representing roughly 13 percent of the $2.4 trillion U.S. retail industry report monthly revenue at stores open at least a year, a key measure since it excludes results from locations that open and close during the year. Some of the biggest retailers like Wal-Mart and Home Depot do not report monthly sales, but the figures still are closely watched because they offer a snapshot of consumer spending, which accounts for more than 70 percent of economic activity.

August's results are important because they offer insight into the back-to-school season ? the second most important selling period behind the winter holidays ? which runs from mid-July through mid-September. Retailers and economists often use the results from back-to-school as a litmus test of how shoppers will behave during the biggest shopping period of the year in November and December.

The gains in August is better than the growth 4- to 5-percent gain Wall Street predicted at the beginning of the month. And it was the best performance since March, when stores collectively posted a gain of 6.8 percent. Except for a shopping lull in June, stores have seen a healthy pace of anywhere from 4 percent to nearly 7 percent growth since the beginning of the year.

A number of retailers posted strong gains. Costco Wholesale Corp.'s revenue from stores open at least a year climbed 6 percent, beating the 4.5 percent rise analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had anticipated. And Target Corp. reported a 4.2 percent increase in revenue at stores opened at least a year. That was better than the 3.1 percent increase that analysts had expected.

"Sales were stronger in the second half of the month," said Gregg Steinhafel, Target's chairman, president and chief executive officer in a statement.

The strong sales reports are an encouraging sign for retailers at a time when there are signs that consumers are becoming impatient with the slowly improving economy. The New York-based Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell to 60.6, down from a revised 65.4 in July. The index now stands at the lowest point since November 2011 when the reading was at 55.2. It's also still far below the 90-reading that indicates a healthy economy.

Several factors may have dampened consumers' moods in August. Gas prices, which had fell sharply from a peak of $3.94 in April, have begun rising again in the last few weeks. And the jobs and housing markets are showing only modest signs of improvement.

Home prices rose 0.5 percent in June from the same month last year, the first year-over-year increase since the summer of 2010, according to The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index that was released Tuesday. And on the job market front, employers added 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. But that's not enough to keep up with a rising population, and the unemployment rate increased to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.

And there are no signs the job market will significantly improve anytime soon. The applications of people applying for unemployment benefits are a measure of the pace of layoffs. When they fall consistently below 375,000, it generally suggests that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate. But the Labor Department said Thursday that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits was unchanged last week at a seasonally adjusted 374,000, which further suggests slow improvement. The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure, increased to 370,250.

Most economists say stronger growth is needed to produce enough jobs to lower unemployment ? and make Americans feel better. The economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, down from 2 percent in the first quarter and 4.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Despite their concerns about the snail pace recovery, Americans are spending, which could boost an economy mired in subpar growth. The Commerce Department said Thursday that consumer spending rose 0.4 percent in July from June, following no change in June and a slight decline in May. Income grew 0.3 percent, matching the gains from May and June.

Are Samsung?s new patent threats an offer to cross-license with Apple?

Samsung?s threatening to fight back against Apple after its recent courtroom defeat with another set of patents: those related to LTE devices. Samsung has one of the largest mobile infrastructure patent portfolios, and could try to use it to neutralize Apple?s design patent win.

Samsung may have been ?reeling? from last Friday?s verdict in its patent trial with Apple, but it looks like it?s regained its footing and looking for the next strategy. In a Korea Times article posted Wednesday, Samsung is threatening to fight back with another patent-related lawsuit of its own against Apple, this time over LTE patents. Samsung?s threat could be bluster, but it could also be a subtle call for a cross-licensing patent deal with Apple.

While Samsung spectacularly lost the patent fight over smartphone design and features, it still possesses the strongest patent portfolio in tech when it comes to mobile infrastructure IP.?Even as it vows to challenge last week?s $1.05 billion jury verdict, the company is also brandishing a set of patents it could assert against Apple. According to the Korea Times:

Samsung confirmed that it will immediately sue Apple if the latter releases products using advanced long-term evolution (LTE) mobile technology. LTE has been emerging as the top standard in the global mobile industry.

Apple does not currently make any LTE-capable iPhones ? though that is very likely to change in about a month or so when the new iPhone is likely to be released. Apple does, however, already make an LTE-capable device: the newest iPad, which comes with the option to add AT&T or Verizon 4G wireless service.

So why the sudden threat now, when Apple already has an LTE iPad? Samsung has one of the strongest patent portfolios when it comes to mobile. It owns more mobile communications patents in the U.S. and Europe combined than anyone. When it comes to mobile infrastructure in particular, Samsung is also the leader in patents, according to Chetan Sharma Consulting. What?s not clear is how powerful its LTE patent trove is.

It could be that Samsung is fishing around for a cross-licensing deal with Apple. In other words: instead of continuing the long and expensive appeals battle with Apple and risking having its devices possibly banned from the U.S. (and potentially having to pay triple the $1.05 billion damages for willful infringement), Samsung could try to coerce Apple into a truce. This would involve offering to license LTE patents to Apple while Samsung in turn would agree to license some of Apple?s patents covering the iPhone and iPad.

Cross-licensing is a fairly common way to end patent disputes ? Apple has such a deal with Microsoft; Facebook and Yahoo signed one recently. It wasn?t one that Samsung was interested in before the trial;?Apple already offered Samsung a cross-licensing deal before the current suit was ever filed, but Samsung did not agree to the (very pricey) terms. But now? It has a billion reasons ? and perhaps a little leverage with a possible LTE iPhone ? to consider one now.

Upside Targets for Apple and Amazon

Using monthly and weekly charts, MoneyShow?s Tom Aspray analyzes these two tech giants to find out not only their near-term targets, but also the technical strength of their long term trends.

As stocks have moved steadily higher since the early June lows, there have been many who have questioned the sustainability of the rally because of the weak economic numbers, as well as what some see as narrow leadership. Recent data on the economy continues to indicate sluggishness.

While the Spyder Trust (SPY) is up 11.3% from the June lows, market leaders like Apple (AAPL) and Amazon.com (AMZN) have gained 28.9% and 19.7% respectively.

Since the Powershares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has a 19% holding in AAPL, many have been very cautious about buying any stocks as they have been unable to trust the rally. The patent award has also increased the bullish sentiment on Apple (AAPL)

As I will discuss in more detail in Friday?s column, the current analysis of the market internals, though positive, does not currently suggest that stocks are ready to accelerate to the upside. There are also no signs of a sustainable market correction?but that could change if these two market bellwethers weaken as they reach our next upside targets.

The combination of the monthly and weekly analysis can help identify not only the upside targets, but also the strength of the major and intermediate-term trends for these two key stocks.

Chart Analysis: The monthly chart of Apple (AAPL) shows that it traded well above the monthly Starc+ bands in March and April, before undergoing a 19% correction.

• For September, the monthly Starc+ band is at $709.85, which is 5.4% above Thursday?s close.
• The 127.2% Fibonacci?retracement calculated from the April-May correction is just above the recent highs at $681. The 161.8% target is $722.
• The monthly RS analysis continues to look very strong, as it will make new highs this month.
• The RS line is well above its uptrend (line b) and its rising WMA.
• The monthly on-balance volume is very close to the March highs, and is well above its WMA and support (line c).
• There is first monthly support in the $600 area.

?

The weekly chart of Apple (AAPL) shows that this week?s Starc+ band at $678 is now being tested. For next week, the Starc+ band is at $689.

• AAPL looks ready to close higher for the fifth week in a row.
• The weekly relative performance?moved through resistance (line d) several weeks ago, and has confirmed the new price highs.
• Typically a breakout of a five-week trading range in the RS line is consistent with a rally that can last for some time. Note what happened in early 2012.
• The weekly on-balance volume (OBV)?has also broken out of its trading range (lines f and g).
• There is first weekly support at $654, with further in the $620 to $640 area.

  Amazon.com (AMZN) has just surpassed the October 2011 highs at $246.71 (line a). The monthly Starc+ band for September is at $280, which is 13.3% above Thursday?s close.

  • The monthly trading range has upside targets in the $300 to $310 area.
  • The monthly relative performance moved above its WMA at the end of April, and is holding well above its WMA.
  • The RS line did make a new high with prices in September 2011, but is still below those highs.
  • The monthly OBV has been just edging higher for the past few months, but has been above its WMA since January 2009, when AMZN was trading at $58.
  • The monthly OBV has formed a series of higher highs (line d) which is bullish for the major trend
  • There is first good monthly support in the $207 area.

  The weekly chart of Amazon.com (AMZN) shows a gradual rally over the past few weeks, and next week the Starc+ band is at $262.60.

  • There is initial support now at $230 to $235 and the May highs. There is more important weekly support now in the $211 area.
  • The weekly relative performance completed its bottom in April, and continues to hold above its rising WMA.
  • There is more important support at the uptrend (line g).
  • The weekly OBV is lagging the price action. While it is above its WMA, it is still below the resistance (line i).
  • The OBV has more important long-term support at line h.

  What it Means: Of these two market leaders, Apple (AAPL) clearly looks the best, and if we get a sharp setback in the next month or two, it is likely to be a buying opportunity.

  Even the hourly relative performance analysis that I discussed in a recent article is still positive for AAPL. Next upside targets stand in the $709 to $722 area.

  The weekly OBV analysis of Amazon.com (AMZN) is a concern, and I would only look to do new buying on a sharp pullback, as our recommended buy level from early in the year was not filled. The next likely upside target for AMZN is in the $260 to $263 area.

  If either trades above the monthly Starc+ bands, it would be a level where longs could be hedged, especially in AMZN.

  How to Profit: For Amazon.com (AMZN), go 50% long at $230.40 and 50% long at $218.40, with a stop at $210.40 (risk of approx. 6.2%).

  Portfolio Update: Investors should be 50% long Apple (AAPL) at $567.50, with a stop now at $584.20.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Omaha won't throw a bash for Warren Buffett's 82nd birthday on Thursday, and that's just fine with the billionaire investor.

The decidedly low-key lifestyle in Omaha, where Buffett was born and where he's lived continuously since 1956, is a key reason he chose to remain there rather than trade up to a city with a splashier skyline or new digs closer to Wall Street.

"If I had to live some other place I'd be fine doing it, but I can't think of a better place to live than Omaha," Buffett said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Buffett was born in Omaha in 1930 and spent the first 12 years of his life in Nebraska's largest city until his father was elected to Congress. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, Buffett didn't return full-time to Omaha until he got his master's in economics at Columbia University and worked in New York for a few years.

He and his first wife, Susie, wanted their children to grow up in Omaha, so they returned to the Midwest city to plant roots.

Buffett didn't plan to start an investment partnership until a few family members and friends persuaded him to do so. But his success with the partnership before he liquidated it allowed Buffett to take control of Berkshire Hathaway in the 1960s and gradually transform the textile company into a conglomerate that today owns more than 80 businesses.

Buffett is known for investing in quality businesses that have fallen out of favor with the market, and he said being in Omaha helped him do that.

"In some places it's easy to lose perspective. But I think it's very easy to keep perspective in a place like Omaha," he said.

Buffett said being far from Wall Street actually helped him.

"It's very easy to think clearly here. You're undisturbed by irrelevant factors and the noise generally of business investments," Buffett said. "If you can't think clearly in Omaha, you're not going to think clearly anyplace."

In the city of 415,000, Buffett can drive the 20 blocks from his home to his office in about 5 minutes.

"I would find a long commute quite irritating even if I did it under favorable circumstances ? even if I had a driver," Buffett said. "I like being in the home and I like being in the office, and I'm not keen on in between."

Buffett said he's never been tempted to move, and that he doubts the company will ever move, either, because he said the two dozen people who work at Berkshire Hathaway's headquarters also like living in Omaha.

Previously, Buffett had said his successor should continue working wherever he or she thinks best, so it wasn't clear whether Berkshire's headquarters could move. Now, Buffett said he doesn't see any reason for his successor to move Berkshire.

"No, it won't be moved," Buffett said.

That's a relief to Omaha boosters who appreciate the people Buffett attracts to the city and the way he promotes the city outside of Nebraska.

The benefits to Omaha are most visible each spring when tens of thousands of Berkshire shareholders arrive for the company's annual meeting. No one knows exactly how much the company benefits Omaha's economy, but local business owners say it clearly does.

Diana Abbott, whose store sells books at Berkshire's annual meeting, said the event generates phenomenal sales, but the intangible ways Buffett helps Omaha may be even more important.

"You say Omaha, they think Warren Buffett," said Abbott, manager of the Bookworm. "It has really improved the reputation of Omaha, especially internationally," Abbott said.

Buffett readily lent his image to campaigns promoting Omaha, and he's featured prominently on the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's website.

"He's kind of our iconic image for the community," said David Brown, the chamber's president and CEO. "This is a special place because he's here."

Berkshire Hathaway has made a number of people wealthy, and many of its early investors were from Omaha.

Dozens of those early Berkshire investors have become philanthropists who focused their donations on Omaha. Many of the city's biggest projects over the past decade bear the name of Berkshire shareholders.

"That's an important asset for this community," Brown said.

Former Omaha Mayor and Congressman Hal Daub agreed that generous shareholders have helped the city.

"Where would Omaha be without Berkshire Hathaway?" he said.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said the presence of Berkshire's headquarters is probably more important than the annual meeting because it helps improve the city's image nationally and boost philanthropy.

Of course, most large corporations, including Omaha-based Union Pacific and ConAgra Foods, employ hundreds or thousands of people at headquarters, not the 24 Berkshire employs. Berkshire makes up for its tiny headquarters with Buffett's visibility. When the so-called Oracle of Omaha speaks, investors listen, so financial news organizations readily travel to the city for Buffett interviews.

"It does bring greater visibility than other Fortune 500 companies," Goss said.

For Buffett, the decision to remain in Omaha seems primarily a matter of personal happiness.

"There's plenty of other places I like, but the one I love is Omaha," Buffett said. "The weather may be a little better some other place else, but that really doesn't make much difference to me in terms of how I feel about enjoying life."

Becoming a single mother by choice (as ... - Creating Motherhood

Making a choice to parent on your own is huge and it is scary. It is also liberating. You are making a decision and acting on it on your own timeline. You are calling the shots about when you will become a parent.

My friend Issa brings up a lot of fantastic points about single parenting in her crib sheet. The two of us met online because we are both single mothers to super-adorable boys.

I remember one night, early into our friendship, when she tweeted out to her friends and followers that she needed some support to get through a hard weekend. It was one of the first weekends where her son was not going to be sleeping at her house, but at his father?s. I sent out my message of support and love, but in all honesty I could not imagine what she was going through.

Being a single mother by choice is not being a single mother by circumstance, even though there are many, many overlaps, the being single part glaringly at the front of the list. But after that, a woman that has begun her journey solo has entirely different things to navigate. So I used Issa?s crib sheet as a jumping-off point, and then added some additional ideas.

Fear and Grief

If you are considering becoming a single mother by choice, there are other elements of fear and grief that will be unique to you.

Making a choice to parent on your own is huge, and it is scary. It is also liberating. You are making a decision and acting on it on your own timeline. You are calling the shots about when you will become a parent.

Grief is understandable, as many of us didn?t imagine living a life or starting a family without a partner. What helped me work through my sadness on this issue was telling myself that just because I am having a child on my own doesn?t mean I will never find love. It simply means that when I do, I will need to make sure he is great father material as well as great husband material.

Preparation and Delegation

Issa talks about delegating parenting tasks to friends and family, and reminds us to carve out time for ourselves.

I prepared to become a single mother by choice in three ways:

1. I did a personal life audit to see if I was ready to be a mom on my own: Did I have some savings? Did I have a clean bill of health? Did I have the guts?
2. I told my immediate family and closest friends, so that I would have a support system through the process of trying.
3. I called my doctor, and together we called a reproductive endocrinologist (RE).

Beyond physically preparing and making sure you have some financial reserves to parent solo, something else to consider is thinking about people in your life who will be a part of your child?s life.

Issa has some great points about knowing whom in your circle you can turn to for specific parenting help. Within my circle I like to think that I have someone for every question that my son could lob at me!

Sharing the Story

At some point, your child is going to want to know his or her story. Even before that, I guarantee that neighbors, the woman at the bank, and that guy on Facebook will want to know how exactly it is that you came to be with child. It is entirely up to you how much or how little you share with others.

I once read that how the news is presented shapes how people receive it. I was thrilled when I finally became pregnant with my son. When I was ready to tell people beyond my inner circle, I began by saying, ?I have some very exciting news!? and I went on to explain that, thanks to modern medicine and a team of doctors, I was going to have a baby on my own.

Telling my son about his story began the day he was born, and it gets more detailed the older he gets and the more he can comprehend. (I am also aware that whatever I tell him will be shared with others ? so heads up on that!)

I have shared with all of my son?s teachers about his unique family. Many children have a different kind of ?normal? at home, whether it is a single mom raising them or two moms or two dads raising them. Telling my son?s teachers allowed them to be more sensitive to topics (such as family day).

Things that Make Life Easier for a Single Mom by Choice

Issa hits the nail on the head by talking about growing your own village. Though I am a single mother, I have never once felt like I was raising my son alone. Between my mother (who is very active in my son?s life) and my friends, we have a tight support system. If you don?t have family nearby, establish the friends that you can lean on like family.

If you discover that your current friends are not able to support you the way you need them to, be proactive in finding ones that can. There is a national network for single mothers by choice called SMC. You can begin by finding a group online, and many have in-person meetups. (You can also always find me on my blog and wave hello!)

What About Dads?

I know that some people worry about role models, especially for boys, in homes where there is no father. I can understand this. It is important for me to talk about fathers with my son, because if he is lucky, some day he will get to be one. We talk about fathers as being parents. When he tends to his stuffed bunny rabbits and affectionately puts them to bed, I compliment him on being a good father.

All eyes on Isaac as Republican convention approaches

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life Monday with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, then hits full speed on Tuesday, just as forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac could reach hurricane strength and make landfall somewhere along a stretch from New Orleans to the Florida Panhandle.

"We've got a great convention ahead," Romney said from New Hampshire as he headed into a high school auditorium Monday morning to rehearse his convention speech, suggesting that there were no thoughts of canceling the gathering. He said he hopes those in the storm's path are "spared any major destruction."

Party Chairman Reince Preibus, for his part, insisted the GOP can "have a great week" despite the storm bearing down on the Gulf Coast.

But Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was not so sanguine. "It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," she said. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

It was hardly the opening splash that convention planners had hoped for, and risked the juxtaposition of Republicans partying as the storm heads toward the gulf ? almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

"Obviously we want to pray for anyone that's in the pathway of this storm," Priebus said Monday on NBC's "Today" show, "but the message is still the same: that all Americans deserve a better future and that this president ... didn't keep the promises he made in 2008."

The party hastily rewrote the convention script to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week, and further changes were possible. Convention planners said Monday's speakers would be worked into the schedule later in the week.

It was a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

The concern was two-fold: that Tampa, hosting thousands of GOP delegates, would get sideswiped by the storm; and that it would be unseemly to engage in days of political celebration if Isaac made a destructive landfall anywhere on U.S. soil.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

Republicans hoped another distracting tempest would blow over, too, concerning abortion. The Obama campaign and its allies have doubled down in efforts to exploit remarks more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP's candidate for a Senate seat from Missouri, that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence. The congressman quickly apologized but resisted Romney's pressure to drop out of the race.

Romney, in a Fox interview, said in comments broadcast Sunday that the fallout over Akin's remarks "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women," adding: "It really is sad, isn't it? With all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

In the reworked convention schedule released early Sunday evening, organizers planned a pro forma opening Monday afternoon, lasting no more than five minutes or so. Priebus was to gavel the convention to order, then immediately recess. Few delegates were expected to attend. In the only bit of convention-hall theater, a debt clock was to be set in motion, to tally the nation's red ink during the convention.

Speakers who had been scheduled for Monday were to start making the case against Obama, under the day's theme, "we can do better." That theme now will be threaded through the following three days, said Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning. "Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," he said.

The roll call of state delegations affirming Romney as the party's nominee now is to unfold Tuesday, an evening capped by speeches from Ann Romney and an assortment of GOP governors. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, gets the prime-time spotlight Wednesday and Romney closes out the spectacle Thursday night, his springboard into the final leg of the contest. That's all if the storm brings no further complications.

So far, many delegates were taking the shakeup in stride. "People are pretty resilient, and people knew going in that there were some weather issues," said Pat Shortridge, the Minnesota state GOP chairman, from Lino Lakes, Minn. "I don't think it's dampened enthusiasm."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in politically vital Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination. And it's clear that memories of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of a Republican administration to respond effectively to its Gulf Coast devastation in 2005, are hanging over Tampa now. Republicans have been so sensitive to the political risks from natural disasters that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008, when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, far from their meeting in Minnesota.

And it surely wasn't lost on Tampa convention organizers that a gathering storm gave Obama an opportunity to show leadership. As the forecast worsened, the president directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help.

"The president also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the administration could provide, including in support of efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention," the White House said Sunday.

Both sides grappled with how to conduct their politicking in the face of the storm. Vice President Joe Biden, who had been prepared to make as much political hay as possible over the Republican convention, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

Polls find a tight race, and it's one that is likely to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House. Republicans hope to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Republican office-holders past and present said the economy is the key if Romney is to expand his appeal to women and Hispanic voters.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," the former Florida governor added.

Obama leads Romney among female voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but trails substantially among men.
