Myanmar elections: A hold-your-breath moment for freedom and Aung San Suu Kyi

Suspense is building for the Myanmar elections April 1. Will democracy fighter and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi finally get an official voice in her country, formerly known as Burma? The US can help freedom emerge in Myanmar through pressure and a new ambassador.

Just days before the April 1 election in Myanmar (Burma), suspense is building: Will Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi finally get an official voice in her country?

It?s expected that she?ll win a seat in parliament and gain the victory that was snatched from her in 1990 by military rulers ? which would be a stunning political comeback.

Less certain is whether her party members will win enough of the other 47 open seats to make a difference in governance. This tightly controlled country is now inching toward greater freedoms, though this week, the government said it was postponing elections in three constituencies in the Kachin district because of security concerns.

Speaking today to foreign election observers and journalists, Ms. Suu Kyi said that the elections ? which will fill only a small number of seats in the parliament ? would not be free or fair by democratic standards. But she vowed to continue with her candidacy for the sake of her country.

While in Myanmar recently, I found my way to a campaign rally for Suu Kyi in a dusty suburb of Yangon (formerly Rangoon). Since she has spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest, it was a rare opportunity. As she often warns supporters, certain elements in the military could revoke recent steps toward openness at any moment.

Two hours before the event, thousands of people filled the streets, jostling for a place to see ?The Lady? appear on a balcony. Fathers wearing new T-shirts sporting Suu Kyi?s picture held up children to see. On one side of me stood a farmer in a traditional peasant straw hat. On the other, a shop girl in a faded cotton sarong waved a little red flag with the fighting peacock emblem of Suu Kyi?s National League for Democracy (NLD).

Buddhist monks in burnt-orange robes walked slowly through the crowd as if they were just out seeking morning alms and ?happened? to be on the block. They had paid a deadly price for protesting in the streets during the ?Saffron Revolution? of 2007. They seem less visible now.

Just a year ago, the monks and the farmer and the shop girl might have been arrested for being there. At this rally, there was a lot of anxious looking-around in the crowd, as if army trucks could roll up at any time.

The only one who seemed totally at ease was Aung San Suu Kyi. When she emerged on the balcony, she spoke to the tens of thousands of people as if they were visitors in her living room. She joked, ?People from other parties can vote for us ? we don?t discriminate.?

With her trademark spray of flowers tucked into the back of her hair, she still has the look of an Asian Audrey Hepburn, but her earnest speeches reflect her Oxford-educated pedigree. She talked about the need for rule of law to protect people?s rights, and solutions to the widespread poverty in Myanmar, where the average income is $2.20 a day. New foreign investment will help create some needed jobs short-term, she said, but ?if our people are not educated, the country can?t develop.?

Fossils hint at mystery walker

Scientists have obtained a fascinating new insight into the evolution of humans and our ability to walk.

It comes from the fossilised bones of a foot that were discovered in Ethiopia and dated to be 3.4 million years old.

The researchers say they do not have enough remains to identify the species of hominin, or human ancestor, from which the right foot came.

But they tell Nature journal that just the shape of the bones shows the creature could walk upright at times.

The fossil haul consists of eight elements from the forefoot - bones such as metatarsals and phalanges.

The specimens were pulled from clay sediments at Burtele in the central Afar region, about 520km north-east of the capital Addis Ababa.

It is a significant discovery because it demonstrates there was more than one pre-human species living in East Africa between three and four million years ago, each with its own method of moving around.

The other creature was the famous "Lucy" animal (Australopithecus afarensis), whose remains were first identified in the Afar in the 1970s.

Lucy's body was built for walking. Her big toe was aligned with the other four digits of the foot, and she had a human-like arch that allowed for very efficient locomotion.

The owner of the partial foot from Burtele was not afarensis; that can be said definitively.

The fossils indicate it had no arch and the big toe was opposed to the other digits, enabling the animal to grasp branches in a tree.

But the fact this creature could and would walk on the ground is evidenced by the nature of the bone joints. These were arranged such that the foot could push off, or toe-off - something only humans do as they walk, and something flat-footed apes cannot achieve.

"If you look at the lateral metatarsal head along with the proximal toe bone, the phalanx - that particular joint is really unique in hominids," explained team member Dr Bruce Latimer of Case Western Reserve University, US.

"You can see it's a very different kind of a joint, because when you toe-off and push forward in that last phase of walking, your toes are highly flexed. In order to achieve that, you have to change the base of the phalanx and the metatarsal head - you have to change both sides of the joint. And it's a highly characteristic type of change that we can pick out immediately," he told the BBC.

The scientists can only speculate as to identity of the Burtele species. Without skull and teeth elements, a formal classification is impossible.

The team says the animal's morphology is reminiscent in some respects to a 4.4-million-year-old creature known as Ardipithecus ramidus. Although, again, it is not ramidus.

"It may be a relic species that was lingering around until 3.4 or 3.3 million years ago, and which had its origins way back in Ardipithecus ramidus times," suggested team leader Dr Yohannes Haile-Selassie.

"But obviously we cannot put it into the Ardipithecus genus or call it a ramidus species because we do not have any craniodental elements associated with this foot.

"We've kept digging at the Burtele site; we have a few isolated teeth, but that's all," the Cleveland Museum of Natural History curator told BBC News.

It is, though, a remarkable thought that there were these two very distinct species effectively rubbing shoulders with each other 3.4 million years ago in what is now Ethiopia.

The landmark Lucy specimen unearthed in 1974 was found at Hadar, about 50km from Burtele. Other remains of afarensis have been discovered closer still.

Dr Isabelle De Groote is a palaeoanthropologist at London's Natural History Museum.

"I think this is really exciting," she said.

"We have so few foot remains, they so rarely preserve, that we tend to take great leaps through evolution where there are no specimens at all representing long periods of time," she commented.

"This new foot helps elucidate the process of how the bi-pedal foot evolved. We can see something of the sequence in how changes to bones occurred."

Zombie fans come alive at undead events

Tim Sloan / AFP - Getty Images

An actress helps promote the TV series "The Walking Dead" outside a Washington, D.C., subway entrance in 2010.

By A. Pawlowski, msnbc.com contributor

When zombie fans want to feel alive, there?s nothing like a date with the undead.

Hungry for realistic encounters, they?re flocking to events where they can be stalked, surrounded and terrified by zombie hordes.

Take the Zombie Survival Horror experience now taking place at an abandoned shopping center in Reading, England, just outside of London.

For about $190 per person, you too can see what it might take to survive a zombie apocalypse and outwit the monsters, that is, the?actors who?ve been transformed into gruesome creatures with the help of special-effects makeup.

Hundreds of people have signed up for the four-hour experience since Zed Events began offering it in March, said Lee Fields, company director.

?Everyone loves a good scare,? he noted. ?Zombie culture has been steadily growing for years.?

Indeed, the genre -- including movies, video games and books?-- is now worth about $5 billion, according to estimates by 24/7 Wall St., a financial news site.

No wonder tour operators and attraction owners are vying?to be part of it.

?Series like AMC?s ?The Walking Dead? have really put a lot of additional focus and awareness on the zombie genre. So zombies are the hottest thing going right now. Everybody out there is grabbing whatever piece of the zombie train they can,? said Dean Jarnig, owner of Zombie Manor in Arlington, Texas.

He opened the house in 2008 as a Halloween attraction, but it?s now in demand year-round for corporate events, private parties and even wedding receptions.

In honor of Zombie Awareness Month?-- yes, there is one and it's in?May?-- the Manor is hosting a Dead Light Fright Night event on May 19, during which visitors?go through the pitch-dark house with only a ?corpse headlight? illuminating their way as zombies await in the shadows. Tickets cost $15.

If you can stand to wait until the fall, there?s the Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse, which began as a Halloween-time event in 2010 and is scheduled to take place again this October at an abandoned truck stop that?has been converted into a paintball field.

Co-creator Jonathan Rej said organizers took bits and pieces from different movies and wrote a script that thrusts visitors into an apocalyptic world full of zombies, scavengers, drug addicts and military guides wielding guns. Guests must make decisions and figure out whom to trust.

?We were trying to imagine, what would it really be like?? Rej said. ?We really want them to feel like they?re in a movie.?

Visitors often come out winded after the intense 20-minute experience that has them running through the 100,000 square foot facility, he added. A $30 ticket gets you into the event and 20 paintball shots at?wandering zombies.

Zombie fan Marlinda Phillips said she loved the thrill of not knowing what to expect during the Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse, which employs 100 actors and draws about 10,000 fans during its fall run.

?You?re part of the story from beginning to the end,? said Phillips, 34. ?It?s like you want to cover your face or close your eyes but you can?t because you?re forced to pay attention to what?s going on.?

The interactive performers who play the undead never touch the visitors, but the experience can sometimes be just too much for the guests anyway.

?People get so freaked out ... they have panic attacks, in some cases they wet themselves, in some cases they throw up, in some cases we have to pull them out of the attraction,? Jarnig said.

It can also be an unintended thrill ride for the actors. Jittery visitors pumped up with adrenaline sometimes try to punch the monsters coming at them, so the performers know to stay at arm?s length, Rej said.

Still, the events always turn out successful, he added. ?Zombies are huge.??

United beats Fulham to open 3-point lead in EPL

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:45 a.m. ET March 27, 2012

MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Wayne Rooney scored in the 42nd minute, and defending champion Manchester United defeated Fulham 1-0 Monday night to open a three-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League.

Following its sixth straight league win, United (23-3-4) has 73 points with eight games remaining as it tries to extend its record for English league titles to 20. Second-place City (22-4-4), seeking its first league title since 1968, hosts United on April 30.

"It's a good position to be in, but it's not decisive," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "It's a good game for us tonight. That's what it will be like for us for the rest of the season."

Rooney scored his 21st league goal of the season after John Arne Riise failed to clear a cross by Ashley Young. United defender Jonny Evans, who had come upfield for a corner kick, stabbed the ball back across goal for Rooney to stroke in from the edge of the 6-yard box. It was his ninth goal in 11 games in all competitions.

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer denied Young and Antonio Valencia in the second half. There were some nervous moments in the final 10 minutes for United, when Michael Carrick appeared to bundle over Danny Murphy in the penalty area. But referee Michael Oliver did not call for a penalty kick.

"I think everyone in the stadium expected a penalty, to be honest," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "But you have to be brave to give a penalty at Old Trafford."

Except for a couple of long-range shots by American Clint Dempsey, 13th-place Fulham (9-12-9) was mostly on the defensive. The Cottagers have just on win at Old Trafford since 1959.

GRANADA, Spain (AP) - Alvaro Negredo put the visitors ahead in the 39th minute, Manu del Moral added goals in the 54th and 90th, and Sevilla beat Granada 3-0 in the Spanish league.

Sevilla (10-10-9) moved within four points of sixth place and the final Europa League qualifying spot, while Granada (9-16-4) remained six points clear of relegation in 17th place.

94% The Secret World of Arrietty

All Critics (113) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (106) | Rotten (7)

As pretty as it is, this Secret World is too Earthbound by far.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a marvelously captivating animated feature about very tiny people and the full-scale world they inhabit.

Yonebayashi gives Arrietty an excellent sense of balance, with the adventure aspects of the story, which feel legitimately dangerous providing well-paced contrast the film's more placid moments.

It's an enjoyable and attractive-looking film, but a little of that "Speed Racer" energy wouldn't have been such a bad thing.

The visual details are inventive, and the animation - particularly the colors - is lovely.

"The Secret World of Arrietty'' is a feast for the eyes that will engage the entire family.

It certainly belongs in the second rank of Ghibli fantasies. But give it a chance.

Most will be caught up in its beautiful spell, immersed in great storytelling at its finest.

The soft-focus animation has an impressionistic quality, as if a gentle breeze had wafted across a Monet canvas.

This smart, winsome fairy tale is not quite Hiyao Miyazaki, but it still might be the best animated film that (some few) will see all year.

Another Studio Ghibli wonder, as heartbreaking for its devotion to craft, artistry and intelligent storytelling (for viewers of all ages) as for its themes of inevitable exile and impossible love.

There's a gentle movie from Japan that's going to seem familiar to a lot of fans of the series of books about 'The Borrowers.'

...yet another jewel in the crown of Studio Ghibli.

...creates a sense of wide-eyed wonder and discovery as we experience the awe-inspiring mysteries of an ordinary house as seen from the four-inch borrower's point of view.

The animation, a gorgeous blend of bewitching watercolored backgrounds and poignantly rendered characters, is, as ever, beyond reproach.

What is most effective is the way the sense of peaceful shelter and retreat in the country setting contrasts with the precariousness of the situations faced by Shawn and Arrietty.

It's hard to imagine this scenario playing out with more delicacy and care than animator-turned-director Yonebayashi Hiromasa brings to bear.

Arrietty has an elegiac mood, like a more wan and sedate Toy Story.

Gently enchanting, an extraordinary adventure

There may not be a frenzy of action and fast cuts but each scene has meticulous details about how the borrowers live, how they make use of the things in their environment to survive.

Tiny people who live in the walls of a rural home are put at risk when they are discovered by the humans residing there. Studio Ghibli offers a soothing animated version of the classic children's novels.

the basic elements of loneliness, friendship, and the fragility of life are intact, along with that ineffable sense of wonder, melancholy, and magic

By being less bizarre than SPIRITED AWAY and having more of a human center to the film, THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY is one of Studio Ghibli's best efforts to date.

A beautiful family film based on THE BORROWERS will delight audiences of all ages

The Secret World of Arrietty is an engaging and warm story of a lovely friendship that has enough action and humour to satisfy all ages, and boy, it's awfully pretty.

Chinese spies target Taiwan's US-made defenses

(AP) ? When Taiwanese security personnel detained a suspected spy for China at a top secret military base last month, they may have had a sense of deja vu.

Air force Capt. Chiang ? he was identified only by his surname ? was the fourth Taiwanese in only 14 months known to have been picked up on charges of spying for China, from which the island split amid civil war 63 years ago. While Taiwan's Defense Ministry did not disclose details of his alleged offense, his base in the northern part of the island hosts the air force's highly classified radar system and U.S.-made Patriot surface-to-air missiles, both vital to the island's aerial defense.

Chiang's arrest followed that of Maj. Gen. Lo Hsieh-che, who had access to crucial information on Taiwan's U.S.-designed command and control system, and civilian Lai Kun-chieh, who the Defense Ministry says tried without success to inveigle Patriot-related secrets from an unnamed military officer. A fourth alleged spy was detained on non-defense-related charges.

The cases show that China is seeking information about two systems that are integral to Taiwan's defenses and built with sensitive U.S. technology. A major breach could make Taiwan more vulnerable to Chinese attack.

Though relations between the two have warmed in recent years, Beijing has never recanted a vow to retake the island, by force if necessary.

Information about the U.S.-supplied defense systems could also help the People's Liberation Army understand other U.S. defenses. Taiwanese officials, however, say their systems are secure, and U.S. experts say American secrets will remain protected in any case.

The possibility that Taiwan might give up military secrets is certainly a worry for the U.S., its most important foreign partner.

Despite shifting recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979, Washington continues to sell the island sophisticated military equipment, and sees it as an element in a string of Asian defense relationships that stretches from South Korea to Australia. Any confirmed leak of U.S. defense secrets from Taiwan to China could undermine U.S. willingness to continue providing military equipment and technology to the island.

"We are concerned whenever this type of incident occurs," a U.S. defense official said in an email response to an Associated Press request for comment on the recent espionage incidents. "However, Taiwan has taken aggressive steps in the last year to protect itself from intelligence threats." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

China and Taiwan have been spying on each other for decades, and U.S. intelligence agencies have also been active on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, including sharing sensitive mainland-related data with Taiwan. But the recent arrests represent a big upsurge in both the seriousness and quantity of Taiwan spy cases compared with previous years.

At the heart of the China's Taiwan espionage efforts are two systems with substantial U.S. technology ? the Lockheed Martin and Raytheon-built Patriot missile defense system and the Lockheed-designed Po Sheng command and control system.

The Patriot uses sophisticated radar to track incoming aerial threats, then launches high-performance missiles to bring them down. The Po Sheng network ? the Chinese name means Broad Victory ? allows Taiwan's army, air force and navy to exchange battlefield information in real time. That is a big advantage in coordinating responses to the attack China has promised if Taiwan ever moves to make its de facto independence permanent.

Defense expert Arthur Ding of Taiwan's Institute for International Relations said successful penetration of the Patriot system could wreak havoc with Taiwan's air defenses, a key component in turning back any future Chinese attack.

"China wants radar data so they can develop countermeasures," he said. "If you have this data you can jam the system or redirect its missiles."

Former Taiwan Deputy Defense Minister Lin Chong-pin said it is not surprising that China was targeting the Patriot and Po Sheng systems.

"These are several of our key capabilities which have been helped by the U.S.," he said. "They are the main obstacles to seizing Taiwan by force."

Deputy Defense Minister Andrew Yang agreed, calling Patriot and Po Sheng "a critical Taiwanese asset." But he told The AP, "The systems have not been compromised."

Beijing's biggest Po Sheng catch to date was almost certainly Maj. Gen. Lo, described by local media at the time of his arrest 14 months ago as the most effective Chinese spy on Taiwan since the 1960s, when a deputy defense minister was picked up in a sweep of communist agents.

Lo headed the army command's communications and information office, and according to Taiwan's defense ministry, he was recruited by the Chinese as a spy in 2004 when he was a military attache based overseas.

Taiwanese news reports say that Lo was arrested on the heels of U.S. surveillance, which determined that he had been recruited by a sultry female spy while serving in Bangkok. The reports said Lo had been blackmailed into providing Beijing with secrets involving electronic warfare and overall strategic planning.

The Defense Ministry says Lo's exposure to Po Sheng was limited. Last July he was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on espionage charges.

Like Lo, Capt. Chiang had access to sensitive military secrets. Taiwanese news reports said he passed information about an early warning radar system through a Taiwanese businessman working in China.

Citing unidentified military sources, Taiwan's Apple Daily newspaper described the system as a joint Taiwan-U.S. air defense called "yellow net" that can track Chinese missiles launched at the island.

The defense ministry has acknowledged that Chiang had worked at a ground command center in northern Taiwan, without elaborating on what he did there.

The Apple Daily said officials concluded that a major motive for his alleged spying had been a desire to get money to impress his girlfriend with frequent visits to expensive nightclubs.

Two former U.S. government officials familiar with American defense sales to Taiwan said that despite some Taiwanese media reports, China's recent espionage activity on the island does not threaten the integrity of U.S. defense technology. They said Washington withholds sensitive information like sofnd equips highly classified electronic components with anti-tamper devices.

Still, more than just U.S. technology is at stake when Chinese spies target Taiwanese defense networks, one of the former officials said.

"How Po Sheng is used, the network layouts, what systems are integrated into the network and what are not, all this would be very useful for the Chinese to know," he said.

This kind of knowledge ? which would not necessarily compromise U.S. technology ? could help the Chinese pinpoint weaknesses in the island's overall defense alignment.

While insisting that China's espionage efforts had not undermined Taiwan's ability to defend itself, Yang, the deputy defense minister, said they showed that China has never let up on trying to steal Taiwan's most vital military secrets, despite Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou's recent moves to try to lower tensions across the Taiwan Strait amid rapidly improving commercial and political relations.

"Nothing has really changed," Yang said. "Beijing has continued its espionage activities despite the improvement in ties."

Dan Aykroyd Announces New Film with Chevy Chase

Dan Aykroyd may be stuck in his quest to resurrect Ghostbusters, but now he's resurrecting the past for a new movie endeavor.

The actor-writer-director wrote on his Facebook page late Monday night that he is working with his former?Saturday Night Live castmate?Chevy Chase.

"Chevy (Chase) and I are about to start work on a script concept for a comedy movie," Aykroyd wrote. "Cannot say too much about the concept, but the joy of working with him again is one that I am extremely excited about. Chevy is one of my favourite people, and one of the great anarchistic and physically committed comedians in the business."

This pairing directly contrasts Aykroyd's struggle with another SNL castmember, Bill Murray, who refuses to star in a revival of the Ghostbusters franchise.

The pair has worked together on a movie set before, as Chase starred in Aykroyd's 1991 directorial debut, Nothing but Trouble.

Currently, Chase co-stars on the NBC sitcom Community, and Aykroyd was featured in the 2010 animated comedy Yogi Bear and will have a role in the upcoming Will Ferrell-Zach Galifianakis political comedy The Campaign.

Jonah Lehrer and the New Science of Creativity

Bob_Dylan_in_November_1963Bob Dylan was stuck. At the tail end of a grueling tour that took him across the United States and through England he told his manager that he was quitting music. He was physically drained ? insomnia and drugs had taken their toll ? and unsatisfied with his career. He was sick of performing ?Blowin? in the Wind? and answering the same questions from reporters. After finishing a series of shows at a sold out Royal Albert Hall in London, he escaped to a cabin in Woodstock, New York to rethink his creative direction.

What came next would change rock ?n? roll forever. As soon as Dylan settled into his new home he grabbed a pencil and started writing whatever came to his mind. Most of it was a mindless stream of conscious. ?I found myself writing this song, this story, this long piece of vomit, twenty pages long,? he once told interviewers. The song he was writing started like any children?s book ? ?Once Upon a Time? ? but what emerged was a tour de force that left people like Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon in awe. A few months later, ?Like A Rolling Stone? was released to critical acclaim.

Creativity in the 21st Century

Every creative journey begins with a problem. For Dylan it was the predictability and shallowness of his previous songs. He wasn?t challenging his listeners enough; they were too comfortable. What Dylan really wanted to do to was replace the expected with the unexpected. He wanted to push boundaries and avoid appealing to the norm; he wanted to reinvent himself.

For most of human history, the creative process has been associated with higher powers; it was about channeling the muses or harnessing one?s inner Apollonian and Dionysian; it was otherwordly. Science has barely touched creativity. In fact, in the second half of the 20th century less than 1 percent of psychology papers investigated aspects of the creative process. This changed in the last decade. Creativity is now one of the most popular topics in cognitive science.

The latest installment is Jonah Lehrer?s Imagine: How Creativity Works ? released today. With grandiose style ? la Proust Was Neuroscientist and How We Decide, Lehrer tells stories of scientific invention and tales of artistic breakthroughs ? including Dylan?s ? while weaving in findings from psychology and neuroscience. What emerges from his chronicles is a much clearer picture of what happens in the brain when we are exercising ? either successfully or unsuccessfully ? our creative juices. The question is: what are the secrets to creativity?

How To Think

Lehrer ImagineThere?s nothing fun about creativity. Breakthroughs are usually the tale end of frustration, sweat and repeated failure. Consider the story of Swiffer. Back in the 1980s Procter and Gamble hired the design firm Continuum to study how people cleaned their floors. The team ?visited people?s homes and watched dozens of them engage in the tedious ritual of floor cleaning. [They] took detailed notes on the vacuuming of carpets and the sweeping of kitchens. When the notes weren?t enough, they set up video cameras in living rooms.? The leader of the team, Harry West, described the footage as the most boring stuff imaginable. After months of poring through the tapes he and his team knew as much about how people cleaned their floors as anybody else ? very little.

But they stuck with it. And eventually landed on a key insight: people spend more time cleaning their mops than they did cleaning the floor. That?s when they realized that a paper towel could be used as a disposable cleaning surface. Swiffer launched in the spring of 1999 and by the end of the year it generated more than $500 million in sales.

Discovery and invention require relentless work and focus. But when we?re searching for an insight stepping back from a problem and relaxing is also vital; the unconscious mind needs time to mull it over before the insight happens ? what Steve Berlin Johnson calls the ?incubation period.? This is the story of Arthur Fry, which Lehrer charmingly brings to life.

In 1974 Fry attended a seminar given by his 3M colleague Spencer Silver about a new adhesive. It was a weak paste, not even strong enough to hold two pieces of paper together. Fry tried to think of an application but eventually gave up.

Later in the year he found himself singing in his Church?s choir. He was frustrated with the makeshift bookmarkers he fashioned to mark the pages in his hymnal book; they either fell out or got caught in the seams. What he really needed was glue strong enough so his bookmarkers would stick to the page but weak enough so they wouldn?t rip the paper when he removed them. That?s when he had his moment of insight: why not use Silver?s adhesive for the bookmark? He called it the Post-it Note.

Fry?s story bodes well with tales of insight throughout history. Henr? Poincar? is famous for thinking up Non-Euclidean geometry while boarding a bus, and then there?s Newton?s apple-induced revelation about the law of gravity. Lehrer delves into the relevant research to make sense of these stories from the neurological level. Fascinating studies from Mark Jung-Beeman, John Kounios and Joy Bhattacharya give us good reason to take Lehrer?s advice: ?Rather than relentlessly focusing, take a warm shower, or play some Ping-Pong, or walk on the beach.?

When it comes to the creative process, then, it?s important to balance repose with red bull. As Lehrer explains: ?the insight process? is a delicate mental balancing act. At first, the brain lavishes the scarce resource of attention on a single problem. But, once the brain is sufficiently focused, the cortex needs to relax in order to seek out the more remote association in the right hemisphere, which will provide the insight.?

Other People

The flip side of the creative process is other people. The world?s great ideas are as much about our peers as they are about the individual who makes it into the textbook. To explore how the people around us influence our ideas Lehrer explains the research of Brian Uzzi who, a few years ago, set out to answer this question: what determines the success of a Broadway musical?

With his colleague Jarrett Spiro, Uzzi thoroughly examined a data set that included 2,092 people who worked on 474 musicals from 1945 to 1989. They considered metrics such as reviews and financial success and controlled for talent and any economic or geographic advantages ? big New York City musicals would likely flub the data. They found that productions failed for two reasons. The first was too much like-mindedness: ?When the artists were so close that they all thought in similar ways? theatrical innovation [was crushed].? On the other hand, when ?the artists didn?t know one another, they struggled to work together and exchange ideas.? Successful productions, in contrast, found an even distribution between novelty and familiarity within its members. This is why West Side Story was such a hit: it balanced new blood with industry veterans.

This is what the website InnoCentive.com teaches us. InnoCentive is a website where, as Matt Ridley would suggest, ideas go to have sex. The framework is simple: ?seekers? go to the website to post their problems for ?solvers.? The problems aren?t trivial but the rewards are lucrative. For example, the Sandler-Kenner Foundation is currently offering a $10,000 reward for anybody who can create ?diagnostic tools for identification of adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer at early stages of development.? Another company is offering $8,000 to anyone who can prevent ice formation inside packages of frozen foods.

What?s remarkable about InnoCentive is that it works. Karim Lakhani, a professor at Harvard Business School, conducted a study that found that about 40 percent of the difficult problems posted on InnoCentive were solved within 6 months. A handful of the problems were even solved within days. ?Think, for a moment,? Lehrer says, ?about how strange this is: a disparate network of strangers managed to solve challenges that Fortune 500 companies like Eli Lilly, Kraft Foods, SAP, Dow Chemical, and General Electric?companies with research budgets in the billions of dollars?had been unable to solve.?

The secret was outside thinking:

The problem solvers on InnoCentive were most effective when working at the margins of their fields. In other words, chemists didn?t solve chemistry problems, they solved molecular biology problems, just as molecular biologists solved chemistry problems. While these people were close enough to understand the challenges, they weren?t so close that their knowledge held them back and caused them to run into the same stumbling blocks as the corporate scientists.

This is the lesson from West Side Story: great ideas flourish under the right balance of minds. John Donne was right: no man is an island.

Conclusion

There are so many wonderful nuggets to take away from Imagine, and Lehrer does an excellent job of gathering stories from history to bring the relevant psychological research to life. The few stories and studies I?ve mentioned here are just the tip of the iceberg.

When I asked him what the takeaway of his book is (if there could be just one) he said:

The larger lesson is that creativity is a catchall term for a bundle of distinct processes. If you really want to solve the hardest problems you will need all these little hacks in order to solve these problems. This is why what the cognitive sciences are saying about creativity is so important.

He?s right. We think about creativity as being a distinct thing and as people being either creative or not, but the empirical research Lehrer discusses tells a different story. Creativity engages multiple cognitive processes that anybody can access.

This is why Dylan?s story is so important: It?s the story of a musician being discontent with his creative direction, having a moment of insight, working tirelessly to bring this insight and new sounds to life to ultimately change the norm. Dylan?s genius isn?t about a specific skill that nobody else possessed. It?s about his ability to wage through the creative process by using the right parts of the brain at the right times.

Not everybody can be Dylan, but Imagine reminds us that as mysterious and magical as creativity seems, ?for the first time in human history, it?s possible to learn how the imagination actually works.?

The author would like to personally thank Jonah for his correspondence.
