What do I do with a reimbursement check from a 401k if I currently ...

My mom did not rollover her 401k from her old employer and the cut her a check. She doesn?t have a 401k with this new employer. She got her check about a month ago and she has not cash it. I have no clue whatsoever what to tell her? Any ideas? Any clues on penalties? Also, her employer does not have open enrollment for 401k, if that means anything. Thanks a bunch!
