??I have two doctors, my left leg and my right.? ~ G.M. Trevelyan
Our last several blog posts have raised awareness about some of the health challenges that our friends within the Bur Bur and Friends multicultural children book series are experiencing.
A very real health challenge that is prevalent among children today is childhood obesity. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion says that childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years.
Childhood obesity is caused by too few calories burned for the amount of calories consumed and is influenced by genetic, behavioral and environmental factors. Childhood obesity has immediate and long-term health impacts:
- Childhood obesity increases the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. A recent study involving 5 to 17 year-olds revealed that 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
- Childhood obesity causes a greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.
- Obese youth are more likely than youth of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults, and therefore more at risk for associated adult health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
The CDC recommends healthy lifestyle habits including healthy eating and physical activities for preschool and elementary school children. This aligns with the intention of our Bur Bur and Friends interactive multicultural children books ? to get children excited about getting outdoors, motivate preschool exercise and elementary school fitness and in the process, cultivate self-esteem.
Our book, ?Anna Goes Hiking,? has won the iParenting Media Award and Parent Choice Award. Through reading this book, like all of the books within our Bur Bur and Friends children?s book series, kids feel like they?ve made new multicultural friends and have had a taste of a brand new active, outdoor adventure.
Going way beyond just being a good children?s storybook, ?Anna Goes Hiking? motivates preschool exercise and activity while teaching children the basics of a new interest.
The closing pages within these multicultural children books always include a few interesting surprises that give kids new insight and understanding. In ?Anna Goes Hiking,? kids will find some mysterious animal tracks and get a little help discovering who made them!
It?s been said that the first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you?re not going to stay where you are.
Childhood obesity is very certainly an issue that needs to be addressed with tremendous sensitivity. A loving way to start is by focusing on enjoyable, positive solutions ? like taking pleasure in active, outdoor adventures together.
