WASHINGTON ? The White House says President Barack Obama will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of next week's U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York.
The sit-down between Obama and Netanyahu comes as the Palestinians prepare to ask the U.N. Security Council to accept them as a full member of the United Nations. Israel strongly opposes that effort, and the U.S. has promised to veto the measure.
The U.S. contends that the only way for the Palestinians to truly achieve statehood is through direct negotiations with the Israelis.
The White House says there are currently no plans for Obama to formally meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
