PFT: Honey Badger to enter NFL draft

Alex Smith, Colin KaepernickAP

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh?s first two seasons with the team have provided a twist on the time-honored formula for a big-screen love story.? Instead of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again, it?s been boy meets girl, boy publicly professes love for girl, boy evaluates second girl, boy professes love again for first girl, boy meets third girl, boy tries to date both as long as he can before kicking first girl to the curb.

The Niners? version of Girl No. 1, quarterback Alex Smith, reacted on Thursday to the reality that, while he?s still one of Harbaugh?s guys, he?s no longer ?the guy.?

?I mean, it sucks,? Smith said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.? ?I don?t know what else to say.?

There?s nothing more to say.? Except, maybe, ?This is why players hide concussions.?

Smith didn?t say that.? But everyone is thinking it.? When Smith told trainers during a Week 10 game against the Rams that he was experiencing blurry vision after being hit in the head, Smith set in motion a chain of events that could ultimately cost him a shot at earning a Super Bowl ring and $7.5 million in 2012 compensation.

So, yeah, it sucks.? Even though Harbaugh made what he believes to be the best decision for the present and future of the franchise.

UPDATE 4:03 p.m. ET:? Actually, Smith came close to saying ?this is why players hide concussions.??? According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Smith also said, ?I feel like the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion.?

Grow Your Business With These Simple Marketing With Email Tips ...

E-mail marketing is one of the most effective methods of advertising today. If you?re thinking about getting into email marketing then use all of the tips in this article to help you get started today.

Use the information you already know to create a much better shopping experience. If a customer is filling out an order form linked from an opt-in email, automatically fill in the information you already know about the customer. This saves time and increases the likelihood that your customers will buy something.

In order to cover all of your bases when you market through email, make use of multi-part messages. These emails include both plain and HTML texts, so they will be displayed no matter the option your recipient favors. This is worth the extra step because someone who only wants plain-text will most likely unsubscribe from an email list that is only HTML.

TIP! Use passive and active feedback to make your email marketing better. Active feedback is exactly what you would expect: asking reader opinions in the form of surveys or questionnaires.

If you plan on utilizing email marketing as a promotional strategy, it is crucial that everyone on your subscriber list has authorized you to send them emails. If you do not do this, you will be accused of sending spam, and it may cause you to lose some customers.

Have goals with your audience. Why would your readers want to sign up for your email list? Once you have the answer, use it to your advantage. You should also be sure you have a subscribe link sent out in your email. This will help your existing customers send a link to their friends. This allows your database to grow organically.

Be sure you?ve digested the valuable information detailed in this article. You should either go through these paragraphs again, or bookmark this article for easy access. That way you will have no trouble applying the advice presented here for successfully manifesting your ambitions.

TIP! Keep in mind that the sole purpose of building an email list is to sell your wares. Therefore, every email you send should increase the likelihood that subscribers will buy.

Review: 'Hairy Tales' by Arges Systems | Video Game Blog, Video ...

Genre: Puzzle?

Platforms: App Store for Mac / iOS, Desura for Windows

Developer: Arges Systems

Release date: October 5th 2012

You will tear your hair out.

Hairy Tales is the debut offering from fledgling indie studio Arges Systems. Developed with the Unity 3D engine, it takes the form of an isometric tile-swapping puzzle-game, with a large amount of inspiration drawn from both traditional board games and the Amiga classic, ?Lemmings?. In this game, you must safely guide your hirsute protagonist across a board comprised of a number of hexagonal tiles. Naturally, this board contains all manner of hazards and obstacles, and like the aforementioned Lemmings, your charge has very little concern for his own safety. He is happy to blindly rush off in whatever direction you face him, oblivious to his surroundings. By moving and rotating tiles, you must force him to navigate a safe path to the levels exit. Along the way, you will collect power-ups which allow you to clear obstacles and improve your end of level rating. This is all couched in a story about defeating some evil ?corruption? befouling the folksy paradise which ?The Hairies? inhabit ? The Hairies, of course, being the little caveman-like creatures under your command. The backstory is vaguely told in a number of short animated cutscenes, and really serves little purpose in the game save as a framing device for the puzzles.

First of all, right off the bat, we have to confront that title: ?Hairy Tales? is one of the worst monikers for a game I have come across in a long time. Not since ?Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake-Eater? has a title so invited innuendo and satire. It tells you literally nothing about the game, except for indicating a possible emphasis on story (misleading, to say the least), and a vague suggestion of events of a trichological nature (okay, it?s a little closer to the truth on that one). One should never judge a book by its cover, of course, but having a title that sounds like it was dreamt up by an adult entertainment exec is not really a good jumping-off point for an innocent platformer.

YouTube Preview Image

Now to the gameplay. Hairy Tales introduces you gently to the games main mechanics, with the early 10 levels or so providing you with simple tutorials on how to manipulate the game world, and your character within it. New elements to the puzzles, such as fences and arrows which redirect your character, and enemies which must be defeated by using power-ups, are drip fed slowly into the levels. Hairy Tales does a good job of not holding your hand too much, and doesn?t condescend you as so many games seem to these days. It trusts you to figure out the puzzle solutions for yourself, and gives you multiple ways to achieve each. However, there is a catch. Hairy Tales gets brutal very quickly, and I mean ?smash your computer with a hammer and wish terrible things upon the games ?creators? brutal. Literally, one level you are just doodling along, admiring the cutesy animations and folky background music, completing a by-the-numbers puzzle, and then suddenly BAM!?.you are hit by a difficulty curve so steep that even Evil Knievel would have soiled himself at the sight of it. Honestly, it?s incredibly noticeable, and one has to wonder how many people looking for a casual, colourful gaming experience a la Angry Birds would be dismayed by it. For a game so innocent in its appearance, a deeply challenging chin-scratcher lies ? paradoxically ? just beneath its exterior. Those looking for a more complex, longer lasting puzzle experience, though, will find great value for money in Hairy Tales. Because it doesn?t force you to accept a single solution to a puzzle, and guide you to this conclusion with the usual winks and nudges, the game makes you feel a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of each level. They?re not just purely mentally challenging, either. In many situations you must rapidly move and rotate tiles whilst your character is legging it round the map, meaning you rely on your reflexes as much as you rely on your noodle. This blend of quick responses and forward planning give the game a similar feel to Portal, and that same sense of feeling peculiarly powerful when crafting a solution.

However, the gameplay is not without its faults. Its not just the puzzles themselves that pose an obstacle ? sometimes, the controls and camera ?are as challenging as the level design. I lost count of the number of times that I was nearing the end of a level, only to have my grizzly avatar thrown off a cliff because of a misplaced tile. The controls are incredibly finicky, and when it comes to camera, you?ve got two choices ? extreme close-up, or floaty isometric view. Sometimes, it?s not very clear which way a character or tile is facing, and it would be extremely useful to be able to rotate the camera ? a feature which, in my mind, is inexplicably missing. Instead, you have to waste a life by just setting your little guy running, and see which way he goes. Needless to say, this leads to some moments of hair-pulling frustration.

Picture of the game map

Unity 3D graphics engine showing off its cel shading

The visuals in the game are nice but not terribly unique. It?s the quirky, deformed art style we?ve seen in every platformer / puzzler since Crash Bandicoot ? big red toadstools, lanky, large headed characters, the slimy greens and browns of the foul ?corrupted? swampland. Nothing here to write home about, but it?s all done nicely and suits the feel of the game. The now ubiquitous cel shading is back for another game, but it?s something the Unity engine seems built to do, and looks good on a mobile screen. Much of the same can be said for the audio ? it?s nice and functional, it works, but it?s not going to be something you?re humming at work for days. Also, some of the sound effects the in-game creatures make are incredibly grating after awhile, and I found myself turning off the SFX pretty early on.

The game currently consists of 72 levels spread over three game worlds. Given the games difficulty, it?s enough to keep you busy for a good long time, especially if you?re up to the task of getting top scores on every level. If you like your puzzlers tough, it?s good value for money and should keep you occupied on those long commutes over the run up to Christmas.

Pros:

  • Solidly challenging gameplay.
  • An abundance of levels will keep you going for a long time.
  • Pretty, if uninspiring graphics and music

Cons:

  • INSANE jump in difficulty, from childs play to hellish brain-torture.
  • Frustrating camera angles.
  • Occasionally shonky controls can be irksome.

Final Score:

If you like ?em tough, and you?re patient, then this is for you. If not, then avoid (or risk going bald with frustration.)

Oklahoma Beats Oklahoma State 51-48: Brennan Clay's TD Lifts No. 14 Sooners To Bedlam Win

NORMAN, Okla. -- After the first overtime game in the Bedlam rivalry, a wild celebration on Owen Field and yet another 500-yard passing game, it all settled in for Landry Jones.

His last home game with Oklahoma was over, and what a way to go out.

Jones threw three touchdown passes and Brennan Clay scored on an 18-yard run in overtime to lift the 14th-ranked Sooners to a 51-48 win against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam rivalry on Saturday.

"No better way," Jones said. "God blessed me so much tonight to be able to go out like this.

"There's no better way to go out."

The Sooners (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) never led during regulation, wiping out double-digit deficits in both halves. Backup quarterback Blake Bell tied it with 4 seconds left on a 4-yard keeper on fourth-and-1 after Jones directed the first 16 plays of an extended drive.

The victory kept alive Oklahoma's chances for at least a share of the Big 12 championship. The Sooners could win it outright by beating TCU next week if No. 7 Kansas State loses to Texas.

"Football's a crazy game," Jones said. "There's up sand downs, good and bad. You have to stay somewhere in that middle ground, realizing who you are and what you're capable of and what type of offense you are.

"When you need a play, just go out and make it."

On the Sooners' second play, Clay got through traffic at the line of scrimmage and then broke through attempted tackles by Daytawion Lowe and Shamiel Gary to score the game-winner and set off an unusually giddy celebration on Owen Field.

The Sooners had lost only three times at home in Bob Stoops' first 13 seasons but dropped games this season against Kansas State and Notre Dame.

Players ran around the field in celebration, joining fans in the stands in leaping up and down when "Jump Around" was blared over the loudspeaker.

"It always feels great to go out on a win," Jones said.

Joseph Randle ran for 113 yards and matched his career-high with four touchdowns for Oklahoma State (7-4, 5-3), which settled for Quinn Sharp's 26-yard field goal in overtime.

Last season, the Cowboys blew out Oklahoma 44-10 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series and win their first Big 12 championship outright.

Oklahoma State fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts after that win. A year later, the elation was replaced with disappointment.

"The truth is the better your program gets, the more success you have and the more highly regarded you are, the harder it is to lose," coach Mike Gundy said.

"In a World Series, a Super Bowl or a state championship game when you lose it's a crushing blow. And the only reason is because you've taken it to another level. For the most part, this program's at a different level."

With his second straight 500-yard passing game, Jones surpassed Texas Tech's Graham Harrell to become the Big 12's career passing leader. He also became the first Bowl Subdivision quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons.

He led Oklahoma's first fourth-quarter comeback victory in five years a week earlier, beating West Virginia 50-49 on a pass to Kenny Stills with 24 seconds left.

"What more do you want from the guy? The guy was, again, fabulous out there tonight," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "He threw the ball all over. He threw it well, throwing bullets everywhere."

Jones finished 46 of 71, both school records, with an interception.

Clint Chelf threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 63 yards for the Cowboys, who were trying to win on Owen Field for only the ninth time but couldn't protect an early 14-0 lead or an 11-point edge in the second half.

"There were a lot of big plays. You know there's going to be ups and downs throughout the game, so we were prepared for that," Chelf said. "We just tried to answer every time they did something and they just made one more play than us."

Jalen Saunders tied it at 38 on the second play of the fourth quarter, dodging three early tackles and racing 81 yards up the Sooners' sideline to score on a punt return.

Oklahoma State answered two possessions later, going 77 yards and taking a 45-38 lead on J.W. Walsh's 2-yard keeper with 10:41 remaining. The Cowboys sacked Jones on third down and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to get the ball back with 7:07 to play, but went three-and-out to give it right back and set up Oklahoma's tying drive.

"We're strong," Clay said. "We're strong-willed and we can face adversity. We can go through any obstacle, and we know this offense is very potent."

PFT: Tebow suits up, but has two broken ribs

Vince WilforkAP

He doesn?t put up big statistics, but few people make a bigger difference for their teams than Patriots most tackle Vince Wilfork.

That was the case in last night?s 49-19 win over the Jets, as Wilfork disrupted everything the Jets tried for a stretch, and made the play that made them the butt of all the jokes today. He was credited with just three tackles, but was the reason many more were made.

?If one of us is making a big play near the line of scrimmage, Vince is almost always a factor in it,? linebacker Jerod Mayo said, via Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe.

Pushing Jets guard Brandon Moore?s backside into quarterback Mark Sanchez might have been just the most obvious, but there were several other examples.

?I?m just taught to fight pressure with pressure, so I just started fighting back and knocked him into Sanchez and it created a fumble,? Wilfork said of the play that made the cover of the New York Post under the headline ?BUTT UGLY.?

Mayo made a pair of short-yardage run stops which were directly because Wilfork tied up a double-team or otherwise blew up a play.

?It?s just man on man,? Wilfork said. ?I think if I can occupy two [blockers], I know one of my ?backers is free. And I have some great ?backers. I put them up against any ?backers in the league at what we do. And I know I expect for them to make plays.?

It?s not a glamorous role to play, but the Patriots know he?s vital to what they do.

?Very unselfish,? coach Bill Belichick said. ?We play him in different positions, where we feel like he?s maybe the most needed, not necessarily where it?s going to feature him or give him a great opportunity to make plays. But a lot of times it is to eat up blockers or try to disrupt plays.

?He?s an explosive guy that?s got very good football instincts. He knows where the ball is, he knows what they?re trying to do. He really responded to a lot of the different challenges or positions that we put him in. He?s done a very unselfish job and been very productive.?

He?s also getting more productive as the weeks pass, which is a good sign for a team that appears to be hitting its stride.

Enbridge pipeline shut briefly after Illinois leak

(Reuters) - About 900 barrels of crude oil leaked from an Enbridge Inc facility near Chicago this week forcing the shut-down of one of its pipelines, but the spill was contained and line restarted the same day, the company said on Friday.

The leak occurred Tuesday at a tank farm at Mokena, Illinois, near Chicago. Enbridge's Line 14, a 318,000 barrel a day conduit that carries crude to Mokena from Superior, Wisconsin, was down following the detection of the spill, the company and regulators said.

Enbridge spokesman Graham White said there was little environmental or operational impact.

"All product was contained within the tank berm, and we are continuing with clean-up and repair," White said in an email.

The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said it is investigating the cause of failure and has been in contact with the operator. A spokesman said he had no details about the specific line involved.

Enbridge's Line 14 was shut for 11 days last summer after it spilled more than 1,000 barrels of crude onto a Wisconsin field.

At Mokena, Line 14 ties into Line 64 to Griffith, Indiana, as part of Enbridge's massive system of pipelines that carry Canadian crude to the U.S. Midwest and southern Ontario.

This week's incident had no impact on Canadian crude markets, which are currently between trade cycles.

Vikings looking to put the squeeze on Bears QBs

The lasting image from the Bears' trip to San Francisco was 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith running amok.

And now Chicago's battered offensive line gets to face Jared Allen, Chad Greenway and the Vikings on Sunday at Soldier Field.

No, Minnesota (6-4) is not in San Francisco's class for creating mayhem with a physically imposing defense. But the way the Bears (7-3) are blocking ? make that NOT blocking ? for their quarterbacks, just about any team will be a major challenge, whether it's Jay Cutler back from a concussion, or backup Jason Campbell on the field.

"You're going to play a great team on their home field, a place that we've struggled at," Greenway said. "But this is a new year, a new team. And I think we're going to have a focus going in there that we're going to give ourselves a chance.

"It's going to take our best effort. It's going to take our best game of the year to win out there this week."

To get that win, the Vikings figure to emphasize their ace, Adrian Peterson, and the running game, while fitting in throws to Percy Harvin, who also is having a strong season. They must be careful not to fall victim to Chicago's ball-hawking defense, which did little against the 49ers, but otherwise has been brilliant. The Bears have seven interception returns for TDs and have forced 30 turnovers, the most in the league.

The Vikings don't get many takeaways, but they can get after quarterbacks. Allen has 13 sacks in eight games against the Bears, including 3 1/2 in last year's season finale.

Whichever defense sets the tone figures to swing things in its team's direction.

On Thanksgiving Day, Houston beat Detroit 34-31 in overtime to improve to 10-1, Washington was at Dallas, and New England at the New York Jets.

Also Sunday, it's San Francisco at New Orleans; Green Bay at the New York Giants; Atlanta at Tampa Bay; Baltimore at San Diego; Pittsburgh at Cleveland; Denver at Kansas City; Seattle at Miami; Buffalo at Indianapolis; Oakland at Cincinnati; Tennessee at Jacksonville; and St. Louis at Arizona.

The Monday night game has Carolina at Philadelphia.

San Francisco (7-2-1) at New Orleans (5-5)

As intriguing as any game on the schedule for many reasons.

The 49ers could get back quarterback Alex Smith from a concussion, but with the way Colin Kaepernick performed in a rout of the Bears on Monday night, it's uncertain who will get the call from coach Jim Harbaugh.

Regardless, it's the San Francisco defense that could decide things. If the 49ers can put pressure on Drew Brees and the increasingly dynamic Saints offense ? Aldon Smith leads the NFL with 15 sacks ? they could control matters. But New Orleans has won three straight and five of six, and Brees could become the third player with 30 TD passes in five seasons.

Green Bay (7-3) at New York Giants (6-4)

The last time they met, New York eliminated a 16-1 Packers team from the playoffs. At Lambeau Field.

The Giants will need to rekindle the overwhelming pass rush that was decisive in that game, plus get Eli Manning back on track. He's struggled the last two weeks, both losses, and hasn't played particularly well in a month. A better running game also would help him.

Green Bay, though, has five straight victories and is tied with Chicago atop the NFC North. In his past seven games, Aaron Rodgers has 24 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 117 QB rating. There's a chance he could get back top receiver Greg Jennings from a torn abdominal muscle, too.

Atlanta (9-1) at Tampa Bay (6-4)

Atlanta lost for the first time two weeks ago, then needed to rally to beat Arizona. The Falcons have won six of the past seven meetings with the Bucs, but those were different Tampa teams. This one is as potent on offense as, well, Atlanta.

Buccaneers rookie Doug Martin already has rushed for 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns.

"Their rookie running back has had some really explosive games," Smith said. "It will be a challenge for us."

But covering Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez will be a huge challenge for the Bucs.

Baltimore (8-2) at San Diego (4-6)

The Ravens will have star safety Ed Reed as they seek their fourth successive victory and eighth in nine games. His one-game suspension for illegal hits was overturned on appeal and instead he was fined $50,000.

Reed and the Baltimore defense haven't played close to the level of previous standards, but did have a strong performance in taking charge of the AFC North last week at Pittsburgh.

San Diego, loser of five of its last six, leads the NFL in throwing interceptions (14) as Philip Rivers struggles without much supporting talent compared to previous years.

Pittsburgh (6-4) at Cleveland (2-8)

Plax is back in Pittsburgh.

Unfortunately for the Steelers, the addition of wideout Plaxico Burress, who was without a team all season, doesn't offset the slew of injuries on offense. Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder, ribs), Antonio Brown (ankle), Jerricho Cotchery (ribs) and Byron Leftwich (ribs) have been sidelined, but Brown could return in Cleveland.

Fortunately for the Steelers, they have a trio of hefty running backs who have come through in Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman.

The Browns blew a 13-0 lead in Dallas last Sunday, another sign of their inexperience. They do play hard for coach Pat Shurmur, who is trying to save his job.

Denver (7-3) at Kansas City (1-9)

The Broncos have won five straight and have their sights on running the table, perhaps grabbing home-field advantage for a portion of the AFC playoffs, if not for the whole thing. Peyton Manning needs one victory, something he's likely to get against the collapsing Chiefs who have dropped seven in a row, to have the second most by a starter in league history. He would move ahead of his current boss, John Elway.

Manning is directing a precise offense, but Denver lost leading rusher Willis McGahee to a right knee injury. The Broncos' defense is getting superb play from Von Miller, who had three sacks last week for 13 this year.

KC leads the NFL in turnovers with 31 and has a minus-21 differential. Denver's minus-3 pales in comparison.

Seattle (6-4) at Miami (4-6)

One game after beating his former player at Southern Cal, Jets QB Mark Sanchez, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll goes against one of his Heisman Trophy winners, Reggie Bush. Well, Bush did win the Heisman, but gave it back after he was found guilty of NCAA violations.

Seattle's defense gets better and more physical each week, something Bush figures to learn Sunday. Bush has totaled 41 yards rushing over the past two games, part of a three-game skid, and even was benched in that span.

Buffalo (4-6) at Indianapolis (6-4)

Were the Colts exposed at New England last Sunday in their 59-24 defeat, or was it simply a case of Indy not being able to play with the big boys yet?

"Once you sit down and watch the film, the critiquing and the criticism, and once that happens, you sort of flush it and realize it's on to the next one," Andrew Luck said. "If this was the last one of the season and you're done, it would sting a lot more."

Luck has five 300-yard passing games to set an NFL mark by a rookie. His 2,965 yards passing are the most by an NFL rookie through 10 games.

Buffalo's defense awakened in a 19-14 victory against Miami, but still ranks 27th overall.

Oakland (3-7) at Cincinnati (5-5)

With two consecutive victories, the Bengals have revitalized their season. A schedule that includes San Diego, Dallas and Philadelphia after the Raiders has them salivating about their chances of making the postseason. Receiver A. J. Green has TD catches in nine straight games.

Oakland, loser of three in a row, has former Bengals QB Carson Palmer, the first overall draft pick in 2003 who still holds Cincinnati marks for career completion percentage (62.9) and passer rating (86.9). It will be Palmer's first time facing the Bengals since he forced a trade to Oakland last year for a first-round and second-round pick.

Carolina (2-8) at Philadelphia (3-7), Monday night

No, the NFL can't flex games to the prime-time broadcast on Mondays, so viewers are stuck with two of the league's biggest flops.

Carolina thought it would build off Cam Newton's sensational rookie season, but instead of sizzling it has fizzled.

No worse than the Eagles, though. Expected to be championship contenders, they have fallen apart, with sloppy play everywhere, particularly on the offensive line, in the secondary and at quarterback, where rookie Nick Foles could again get the nod ahead of Michael Vick, who is recovering from a concussion.

Tennessee (4-6) at Jacksonville (1-9)

Jacksonville had powerful Houston in trouble last Sunday, but couldn't put away the game. The 37 points for the Jaguars in that loss brought their season total to a measly 164. They will go with Chad Henne at quarterback with second-year starter Blaine Gabbert on injured reserve.

It looks like the Titans have fixed some of their defensive woes, and they come off a bye that followed a 37-3 romp in Miami, their best performance all season. Before that came their worst, a 51-20 thrashing at the hands of the Bears.

St. Louis (3-6-1) at Arizona (4-6)

Arizona was 4-0 when it journeyed to St. Louis and was beaten 17-3. Things have been downright ugly since for the Cardinals, who can't score, can't decide on a quarterback, and struggle against the run. A defense expected to excel has disappointed.

The Rams are maddeningly inconsistent, following a tie at mighty San Francisco ? a game they should have won ? with a flop against the Jets. Look for a steady diet of runs by Steven Jackson and Daryl Richardson.

Narnia author Lewis to be honoured at Poets' Corner

LONDON (Reuters) - "Chronicles of Narnia" creator C.S. Lewis will be honoured next year with a memorial stone in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey in central London, the abbey said on Thursday.

The novelist, poet, essayist and literary critic will join the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy who are either buried or commemorated in the famous location.

The memorial will be dedicated at a special service to be held on November 22, 2013, the 50th anniversary of Lewis's death at the age of 64. He was buried in Oxford.

Vernon White, Canon Theologian at Westminster Abbey, called Lewis "an extraordinarily imaginative and rigorous thinker and writer who was able to convey the Christian faith in a way that made it both credible and attractive to a wide range of people.

"He has had an enduring and growing influence in our national life," White added.

Lewis is best known for his Narnia children's fantasy series about the adventures of a group of children who stumble across a magical world where they encounter the talking lion Aslan and the evil White Witch among others.

The most famous was "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" published in 1950, and the seven-book series as a whole has sold over 100 million copies and been adapted for radio, television, stage and film.

Lewis's other works include "The Screwtape Letters", and Westminster Abbey described his "Mere Christianity" as "a classic of Christian apologetics, seeking to explain the fundamental Christian teachings to a general audience."

Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898 and won a scholarship to study at Oxford University in 1916.

In 1917 he was commissioned as an officer and fought on the frontline during World War One where he was wounded in 1918.

Lewis returned to Oxford where he taught English and was a close friend of "The Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien.

He married late in life and his relationship with American Joy Gresham was captured in Richard Attenborough's award-winning film "Shadowlands". Lewis died on the same day that U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.

Holiday shopping marathon starts as consumer sentiment remains shaky

(Reuters) - Forget that Turkey trot. Thanksgiving is now the start of the annual holiday shopping endurance race, as more stores open on Thursday's national holiday to seek a bigger share of spending that is expected to grow slowly this season.

Target Corp has joined Wal-Mart and Gap Inc in being open at least part of the day, and some retailers will be open throughout the day, a trend that began to take hold in 2011.

Traditionally, retailers enticed shoppers with "doorbuster" deals early Friday morning. Then they shifted to midnight following Thanksgiving.

Now Walmart's U.S. discount stores, which will already be open during the day, will offer some "Black Friday" deals at 8 p.m. and special deals on some electronics at 10 p.m. Target has moved its opening from midnight to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Toys R Us is opening at 8 p.m.

Other retailers, like J.C. Penney Co Inc are holding out and will not open until Friday morning, so shoppers trying to get all the deals will need a lot of stamina.

"The retailers are taking what was a very plannable sport that was four or five hours where you can get things done and turned it into a marathon," Trutina Financial Chief Investment Officer Patty Edwards said. "I think the retailers have diluted the sport."

The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, which can earn more than a third of their annual sales in the holiday season. Investors hope holiday sales will help retail stocks cap a strong year. The Standard & Poor's retail index is up almost 27 percent this year, compared with a 10.6 percent increase for the broader S&P 500.

The National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, forecast a 4.1 percent increase in retail sales during the November-December holiday period this year, down from the 5.6 percent increase seen in 2011.

Consumers heading into the holiday shopping season remain worried about high unemployment and possible tax increases and government spending cuts in 2013.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, two-thirds of shoppers said they were planning to spend the same amount as last year or were unsure about spending plans, while 21 percent plan to spend less and 11 percent plan to spend more.

On Wednesday, The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on consumer sentiment fell from its initial reading earlier in the month.

One element in favor of retailers this year is the calendar, as there are two more days between Thanksgiving and Christmas than last year and Christmas falls on a Tuesday instead of a Sunday, giving shoppers an extra full weekend before Christmas.

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Jennifer Davis estimated the additional two days will benefit December comparable sales by 3 percent to 4 percent.

But "the extra weekend before Christmas this year will likely amplify the post Black Friday lull and result in even more back-end loaded sales," she said in a note to clients.

Cooler weather could boost apparel sales from last year, when unseasonably warm weather left many stores stuck with winter clothes they had to sell at drastic discounts.

But analysts and economists also said superstorm Sandy, which lashed the densely populated East Coast in late October, could cut into how much shoppers can spend on the holidays.

While the holiday season is important for all retailers, two will be under especially close watch this year - J.C. Penney and Best Buy Co Inc.

J.C. Penney is in the middle of a radical transformation under CEO Ron Johnson, who is trying to turn 700 of the retailer's stores into collections of boutiques by 2015.

But while some of the new shops in its stores have been performing well, overall the retailer has turned customers off with its plan to eliminate coupons and most sales. Friday will be the company's only sales event of the year.

"I think eventually it will work. It is going to be a lot of pain until it works," Edwards said.

At Best Buy, new chief executive Hubert Joly is trying to devise a plan to stem falling sales and stave off cutthroat competition from the likes of Walmart and Amazon.com. At the same time, the company's largest shareholder and founder, Richard Schulze, is trying to put together a bid to take Best Buy private.

"They haven't been very price savvy, haven't really known how out of whack they've been or if they've known, they haven't really responded to it," Liz Ebert Director, Advisory at KPMG, LLP, said.

(AP Photo/Grinnell College, Cory Hall)

How did Grinnell's Jack Taylor wind up with 138 points in a game?

Well, he did miss 56 shots, more than he made. And he didn't play for four minutes.

Otherwise he would have scored even more.

As it was, Taylor shattered the NCAA scoring record by 25 points Tuesday night in the Pioneers' 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible in Grinnell, Iowa.

Taylor hoisted a mind-boggling 108 shots, one every 20 seconds. Layups, fadeaways and 3-pointers (27 of those) were all working in a display that had the NBA's basketball royalty buzzing a day later, from Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant to Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James.

"It's like a video game," Anthony said. "How can you shoot 108 times?"

"It's unbelievable, honestly," James said. "There's two games that I would love to see: One was Wilt, when he had 100, and this kid, I want to see him, too. Sir Jack."

Wilt Chamberlin's record of 100 points scored in 1962 still stands as the NBA mark. Taylor was the third player in NCAA basketball with at least 100 points, but his performance was the most prolific.

Taylor himself was still trying to catch his breath Wednesday.

"Honestly, it's still not settling in. It was hard to sleep," Taylor told The Associated Press after appearing on "Good Morning America" and the "Today" show.

Understandably so. Taylor is just a 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis. How did he score more points than anyone in college history?

Well, he had 58 at halftime. And then he scored 30 more in the first nine minutes of the second half, draining seven straight 3s at one point.

The Division III record was the first to fall, as Taylor reached 91 points on a 25-footer from the left wing with 11:14 to go. He cracked 100 on a layup less than three minutes later, and with 4:42 to go he drained yet another 3 to pass the NCAA record of 113 set by Rio Grande's Bevo Francis against Hillsdale in 1954.

In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College but Frank Selvy is the only other player to reach triple figures, scoring 100 points for Division I Furman against Newberry in 1954. The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

Taylor made 27 of his 71 3-point attempts and was 52 of 108 overall. He had a hot hand, sure, but he plays in a system designed to reward high-volume shooting.

Grinnell's goal is to shoot within 12 seconds of getting the ball, something borrowed in part from the breakneck system Paul Westhead installed at Loyola Marymount in the 1980s. The 3 is the shot of choice ? in fact, every player must shoot 100 3s every day in practice ? and the four guys who don't shoot crash the boards. The Pioneers also press relentlessly on defense, hoping to force a turnover or a quick shot so they can get back to scoring more points.

The style demands fresh legs, and the Pioneers typically substitute every 60 seconds or so.

"It's just something completely different than you face any other time you play," said Brian Fincham, the coach at Faith Baptist Bible, a school in nearby Ankeny, Iowa, with fewer than 300 students. "If they've got a little bit of ability on you, it's tough to keep up."

When coach Dave Arseneault landed at Grinnell 24 years ago, he inherited a program that went from 1965 until 1994 without a winning season. Because of their high academic standards and rural location 50 miles east of Des Moines, winning basketball had simply eluded the Pioneers for decades.

Arsenault wanted to make up for Grinnell's lack of athleticism and size, and make the game more fun. The Pioneers have won four conference championships with the pour-it-on style but have yet to win an NCAA tournament game, raising questions about whether the emphasis on scoring at the expense of defense and patience doesn't reflect traditional basketball strategy and sportsmanship.

"Maybe they're right," said David N. Arseneault, the co-head coach and the Arseneault's son. "But the way I look at it is ... there's no chance we would have been able to have even close to the amount of success we've had without this system."

The Pioneers didn't set out to have Taylor break any records Tuesday night. But after discovering Taylor had 58 points at halftime, they decided to go for it.

"A lot of people are saying it wasn't the most team-oriented thing to do," Taylor said. "But I wouldn't have been able to do it without the encouragement and support from my teammates."

Taylor didn't leave the game until the closing moments with his team up 70. Arsenault said he thought about pulling Taylor earlier, but after watching him drain six straight 3s in a two-minute span, he couldn't bear to pull the plug on something so special.

"My thought was 'Hey, man, the kid's got it going. I'm going to let him go,'" he said.

Fincham said he wasn't offended by Taylor's pursuit of the record. In fact, Fincham decided at halftime that it would try to get at least 50 points for his own player, David Larson, who finished with the quietest 70-point night in the history of basketball. He broke the school record of 47 and gave his teammates a reason to hold their heads high.

"Our students come for ministry," Fincham said. "They don't come for basketball, obviously."

Germany considering repatriating it's gold held at NY Fed. - Chicago ...

Germany holds 1,536 tons of gold at the sub basement of the New York Federal Reserve. That amount constitutes about half of all of Germany's gold holdings. With all the financial trouble happening in the world, talks that Germany wants to repatriate it's gold held at the NY Fed is intensifying.(Der Spiegel article).

If Germany does this, it would send a major ripple throughout the world. See Germany is one of the world's largest economies and the largest economy in Europe. If it repatriates its gold, it would send a message that it want in its posession its wealth. Germany would be saying that they do not trust having its gold in the US and that it feels it is safer in it's own hands. Already, Venezuela repatriated its gold. If Germany does it, other countries will surely follow and there could be a run.

Another major problem is that the Fed refuses to even let Germany see its own gold. They claim that "?in the interest of security and of the control process," Germany cannot see its gold.

This is extremely disturbing and only further squells the rumor that the NY Fed may not actually still have the gold in its posesssion.

"Such intense secrecy fuels legends. Many conspiracy theorists have suspected for decades that the German gold has long since disappeared. Others believe that it has been lent out. They contend that there are only promissory notes of little worth stored in the bank's vaults," said Der Spiegel.

To help alleviate concerns the Deutsche Bundesbank (German for German Federal Bank) is seriously considering taking back home 150 tons of gold for inspection. Doing so may provide some temporary assurances. However, if the European financial situation worsens, look for a call from even more drasting measures.

Nine-Year-Old Boy Authors Book About Mom?s Breast Cancer

James Trey Rawlins III is a 9 year old author who wrote a book about his experience with his Mom's battle with breast cancer in 2007

.

In 2007, Veronica Marian-Rawlins and her then four-year-old son, James ?Trey? Rawlins III, searched high and low for books that could help them understand the bleak transition their lives were facing when Marian-Rawlins was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Unfortunately, they couldn?t find a single book that would help them prepare for the changes they were soon to face ? that?s when Trey decided he?d write his own book to help other kids and their mothers through the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis. Now age nine, Trey is a published author with the help of a $1,000 donation from Howard University Hospital and his mother?s financial contributions.??When Mommy Came Home? is targeted toward children ages four to seven. Initially the book was sold via word-of-mouth for $10 through his mother. It quickly became so popular among local schools, clinics and hospitals that it is now sold out. The mother-son team hopes that with donations, they will be able to order more books that can be distributed to the people and places that may need them most.

The book recounts the experience Trey had with his mother as she underwent treatment for her diagnosis. He says she?d ?see Nurse Karen for her treatments ? she?d sit in a big comfy chair ? eat treats and snacks and sometimes do her nails.? He even provides subtle details about his experience saying, ?I waited until she came home? and the two would nap on the couch. Trey also details how he helped his ill mother by doing ?little jobs? like dusting or emptying out the trash. The book contains over 20 illustrations from Jean Marie Sanchez of Hamden, a children?s book writer and illustrator.

Despite the success the book has shown them, Marion-Rawlins said they?re not seeking financial gain from it. ?We?re not looking to make a profit,? she said. ?We want to donate them to hospitals, so when other moms are diagnosed, now they?ll have a tool that I didn?t have. So if they have a young child, they?ll know what to expect.?

One nurse believes the book is a must-have for families who are facing serious illnesses. ?I think this will definitely have a positive impact on children,? said Karen Underwood, a registered nurse at Yale New Haven. ?That population goes through a lot of stuff and many parents wonder what?s going to happen to their children.?

Marion-Rawlins is now ?in good health and is currently working with Trey again to write a second book about her niece to?who wears a cochlear implant because of a hearing impairment. She says the purpose of the book is to??provide awareness regarding that community.?
