You know when you are aware that somebody does something, but you never really look into it or come in contact with that something? Well, I was aware that my friend Edward Yedid was an interior designer and a partner at GRADE, but since I hadn?t seen him in some time I managed to miss all this! Then a few weeks ago his work popped into ?my inbox via various spreads in NYMagazine and Curbed. I was SO impressed, that I called him right away to congratulate him and arrange a little something for Sketch42.

Edward and his partner at GRADE, Thomas Hickey met at Parsons in 2003 when Hickey was Edward?s professor. Edward approached Hickey about starting his own firm. Hickey laughed it off at first, but Edward persisted and after graduation they began working together. They?ve since become partners at GRADE, their design and architecture firm that now staff?s 15 in house designers and boasts a custom furniture collection. They?ve since designed spaces all over the world, including everything from apartments, to houses, to retail spaces for companies like Tiffany & Co and Victoria Secret.

When looking over GRADE?s portfolio, I was particularly struck by their take on the modern family home in Manhattan. Obviously, that?s because I have a young family and live in Manhattan, but its ALSO because the GRADE team is really amazing at designing homes for families? I?m particularly in love with every single one of those kids bedrooms (which they design around the children?s interests: airplanes, skateboarding etc)? and the photos of the GRADE take on the ?Bachelor Pad? for the Holiday House this year.

I shot Edward a few questions about his work, aesthetic, likes and dislikes. Hope you enjoy!

1. What?s the GRADE manifesto, if you had to have one?

We design each project to be specific to the client and their lifestyle while maintaining our overall aesthetic.

2. Your aesthetic ?is decidedly crisp, what are some ways that you infuse warmth into a modern interior? any tips for those who want a minimal home that doesn?t feel cold?

Our color palettes are generally white based ?- so we use rich materials like silk, mohair, leather, custom stained woods and metals to add depth and clarity.

3. When starting a project, where do you find inspiration?

It?s endless?everything we experience on a daily basis contributes to our designs?.travel expands this even further.

4. How do you guys like working in a team, can you describe the dynamic?

Tom and I lead the design and we have an amazing team that is able to translate and develop our ideas into inteligent, elegant and fresh looking spaces.

5. I want to see how you live? a designers home is like is calling card:?how would you describe your personal style and how does that translate to your home? Do you decorate for yourself differently than you would for a client?

The design of my apartment is a direct reflection of my personal style and character (photos to come soon). ?When my clients ask what I would do if it was my home ? I tell him it?s not ? would they want their home to reflect that of a 33 yeard old bachelor?

6. What are the 5 things that every interior needs?

Inspiration, clarity, style, sex appeal.

8. Grade does very sophisticated homes for young families?you seem to keep to a monochromatic scheme in the communal rooms and yet you let the colors explode in the kids rooms- and you do color so well! have you done any projects with colorful common areas? why or why not?

We like to use color strategically and elegantly ? in details, art & objects?most of our clients feel the same way ? kids, however, need to be surrounded by fun ? so we give it to them.

9. Some designers love to decorate kitchens, others love bathrooms or bedrooms? what is your favorite room in the house to design? ?

I think we enjoy all of them?.kitchen and master bath usually allow the most opportunities and the powder room is usually the hidden gem?they?re all good.

10. What advice can you give designers who are just starting out? aside from don?t do it? (haha).

Be honest and take care of your clients?

11. If there is one thing to invest money into in a home, what would it be? What should a person splurge on if they can only afford one expensive thing?

The architecture?If you can only afford one expensinve thing ? buy a painting.

12. What is your decorating pet-pieve?

Decorating?we are designers.

13. Any advice for do it yourself designers? How can the general population make their homes more interesting and beautiful, in your opinion?

Rutgers webcam case: Dharun Ravi publically apologizes

Ravi was convicted of bias intimidation last week and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He will begin to serve his sentence on Thursday.

A former Rutgers University student openly apologized for the first time on Tuesday for using a webcam to spy on a romantic liaison between a man and a roommate who later killed himself, saying he regrets his "thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices."

Dharun Ravi, who had been criticized by a judge for not showing remorse and for refusing to say he was sorry, also said he will begin serving a 30-day jail term on Thursday even though he doesn't have to.

Through a lawyer, Ravi issued his most contrite public statement yet in a case that made him a symbol of what his family called an overzealous prosecution and that made his roommate, Tyler Clementi, a prime example of what gay rights advocates said were the consequences of bullying.

"I accept responsibility for and regret my thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices that I made on Sept. 19, 2010, and Sept. 21, 2010," Ravi said in his statement. "My behavior and actions, which at no time were motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice or desire to hurt, humiliate or embarrass anyone, were nonetheless the wrong choices and decisions. I apologize to everyone affected by those choices."

After spending two days repeatedly looking at the Twitter feed on which Ravi announced "I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Clementi, a shy, talented violinist, threw himself from New York City's George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010.

In March, a jury convicted Ravi of all 15 criminal counts with which he was charged, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation. On two of the intimidation counts, he faced up to 10 years in state prison.

Last week, a judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail. Because the sentence is less than a year, it decreases the chances that federal immigration authorities will seek to have Ravi deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen.

Prosecutors, finding the sentence too lenient, said they would appeal.

Ravi's lawyers have said they expect to appeal the convictions entirely. They say that he was not hateful and that authorities charged him with such serious crimes because of Clementi's suicide even though he was not charged with the 18-year-old's death.

Ravi, 20, could have remained free during the appeal but instead is volunteering to head to the Middlesex County Jail in New Brunswick.

"It's the only way I can go on with my life," he said in the statement.

The apology comes as a sharp reversal in course for Ravi, whose story inspired hundreds of people to rally at New Jersey's State House calling for no prison time and changes in the state's hate crime laws.

When Ravi was sentenced, Judge Glenn Berman chastised him for not apologizing for his actions.

"I heard this jury say 'guilty' 288 times," the judge said, referring to all the sub-parts of the charges Ravi faced repeated 12 times, once for each juror. "And I haven't heard you apologize once."

During the court proceeding, Ravi, who had said in March in a newspaper interview that he was "very sorry about Tyler," chose not to address the judge, though he cried as his mother pleaded for mercy for him.

He told Newark's The Star-Ledger newspaper in an interview conducted before the sentencing but published afterward that he did not want to say he was sorry during the sentencing because he thought it would sound insincere.

During the sentencing, Clementi's brother James Clementi said that hearing an apology that late from Ravi would not be meaningful to him.

On Tuesday, the state's largest gay rights group, Garden State Equality, said it was happy Ravi had publicly apologized. But Chairman Steven Goldstein said the group was questioning the timing of the apology.

"We have mixed emotions, and so rather than take an organizational stance just yet, we have posited the question to our members on (the group's) Facebook page to ask what they think," Goldstein said.

Garden State Equality has said Ravi deserves more jail time than he received but "nowhere near" the maximum sentence he could have received.

"We have said that our hearts would be open to an apology had Ravi opened his heart up to us all," Goldstein said. "He could have apologized in a way that would not have compromised his legal position. But he came across to many of us as unremorseful both before the trial and in engineered media appearances after the verdict."

Land and sea species differ in climate change response

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? Marine and terrestrial species will likely differ in their responses to climate warming, new research by Simon Fraser University and Australia's University of Tasmania has found.

The study, published this week in Nature Climate Change, provides insights into why and how species are moving around the globe in response to global warming.

Researchers gathered published data from tests determining the physiological temperature limits -- tolerance to heating and cooling levels -- on 169 cold-blooded marine and terrestrial species, then compared the data with the regions the species inhabit.

They found that while marine animals closely conformed to the temperature regions they could potentially occupy, terrestrial species live farther from the equator than their internal thermometers suggest they can live. In other words warm temperatures aren't limiting them from living in closer to the equator.

"Finding that marine and terrestrial species are limited by their cold tolerance suggest that warming will allow expansions of animals towards the poles to take advantage of newly opened up habitats," says lead author Jennifer Sunday, a biologist from Simon Fraser University, Canada.

"However because land animals are not limited by heat to the same extent as marine animals, patterns of retreat in the hottest regions of species' ranges may differ between land and sea."

The research team found that while both the cold and warm boundaries of marine species are marching towards the poles, terrestrial species have been less responsive at their warm versus their cold range boundaries.

"We think a combination of things is going on," says Amanda Bates, co-author from the University of Tasmania's Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). "A species niche isn't just set by temperature. On land where water is key, species may be hindered more by dryness rather than being too hot at this range boundary.

"Second, it could be that rare heat waves are actually setting boundaries on where species can live. Finally, as Charles Darwin pointed out over 150 years ago, there may be more species and much more ecological competition toward the tropics, which may be enough to exclude species from living in the warmer end of their potential real estate."

The authors call for research to better understand how climate change will affect animals, especially those on land where predicting responses to warming may be particularly difficult.

"Terrestrial species ranges may stretch towards the poles -- expanding their cold range boundaries but responding erratically at their warm boundaries," says Nicholas Dulvy, a marine biologist at SFU.

"These individuals will be overrun by the 'pole-wards' march as other species enter their territories. So we will see all sorts of new ecology as species come into contact and interact as never before."

The team concludes by pointing out that while chaotic species combinations may be bad news for animals on land, entire assemblages of species are likely to shift in the ocean, meaning researchers can make better predictions about how marine species redistribute in the face of climate change.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the cyberattack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tools like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

Top 10 Places to Buy Foreclosures According to RealtyTrac ...

In its May foreclosure newsletter, RealtyTrac named the top 10 places to buy foreclosures in 2012. The selected locations were out of the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas based on population. The list was further narrowed according to markets with at least 200 foreclosure-related sales transactions in January 2012. Then, it was whittled down again to only include metros with foreclosure sales prices at least 30 percent below the average price of a non-foreclosure property.

The number one metro to buy a foreclosure in 2012 is Kansas City, Missouri, where the average foreclosure sales price is $73,257 compared to $101,710 a year ago. The average discount for foreclosures is 51 percent. Overall, foreclosures make up 29 percent of all sales in this metro. Citing data from the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors, the newsletter stated home sales in Kansas City rose 14 percent in March from a year ago, and prices increased 3 percent from a year ago.

Boston earned the number two spot with an average foreclosure sales price of $195,672 compared to $203,606. The average discount is 49 percent, and 18 percent of sales are foreclosures. Boston also had the lowest unemployment rate on the list at 5.9 percent.

Pittsburgh came in at number three. The average foreclosure sales price is $73,142; last year, it was $82,928. The average discount is 48 percent.

At fourth place, Tulsa has an average foreclosure sales price of $86,725 compared to $113,969 last year and also has an average discount of 38 percent.

San Francisco earned the number five spot. A pricey city to own a home, San Francisco foreclosures averaged $307,803, down from last year?s average of $317,409. Discounts for foreclosures are about 38 percent. Out of all sales, 47 percent were foreclosures in San Francisco, the highest out of all 10 cities. Real estate blog Movoto estimated Facebook?s initial public offering will add $1 billion to property values in the Bay Area.

Cape Coral-Fort Meyers, Florida is sixth best place to buy a foreclosure, and averaged at $102,022, with last year?s sales prices at $93,976. Discounts were also 38 percent.

Charlotte ranked number seven and averaged $118,808 for foreclosed homes. Last year, the average was $144,614, also with a 38 percent discount.

Tucson, Arizona was number eight at $112,660 compared to $129,500 last year. The average discount was also 35 percent. According to the Tucson Association of Realtors, sales rose 16 percent in February from a year ago. Also, the average sales price increased 4.75 percent from January to February, according to RealtyTrac.

Seattle foreclosures averaged $212,565, a drop from the year ago price of $237,852. At number nine on the list, the metro had an average discount of 35 percent.

The number 10 spot went to Columbus, Ohio, where the average sales price is $98,223, falling from $101,152 last year. Average discounts were 32 percent.

Ever since Universal announced during CES 2012 that it would deliver many of its classic films on Blu-ray this year as part of a centennial celebration, we've been keeping a careful eye out for news regarding Steven Spielberg's classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. While we still don't know the release date, price or if it will contain the changes made in the 2002 edition of the flick, Universal posted a trailer for the Blu-ray (embedded after the break) that confirmed a digital remastering from the 35MM film, 7.1 surround sound and "hours of bonus features". Additionally, forum posters on Blu-ray.com have noticed this (probably not final) box art appearing on Amazon UK recently. After waiting for word since a new distribution deal brought the flick back to Universal in 2008, a few months of silence hasn't broken us, but hopefully more details appear soon. The best guess still sees the 30th Anniversary release hitting store shelves in time for the holidays (likely after Jaws, which is scheduled for release August 14th), when we can relive our childhoods in proper 1080p HD at last.

The former eBay executive who was hired as H-P chief last September announced the company would lay off about eight percent of its 300,000 workforce over the next two years, one of many changes that are coming to the troubled personal computer maker. Wall Street responded positively to the news, pushing H-P stock (HPQ) up more than five percent early Thursday morning.

The layoffs, which are expected to save H-P $3 billion to $3.5 billion annually, are just one phase of a restructuring designed to deemphasize the relatively low-margin PC and printer business and instead focus on the more promising cloud computing services.

H-P said its profit in the last quarter fell 31 percent from the same period a year ago and revenue declined three percent. The company reported net income of 80 cents a share in the second quarter compared with $2.3 billion, or $1.05 a share a year ago, above analysts' expectations. H-P also raised its full-year earnings-per-share outlook largely due to the expected savings in personnel cuts.

With the stock having dropped 40 percent over the last 12 months, the Street's positive response to the earnings release had less to do with the numbers and more to do with H-P trying something else.

Whitman addressed the layoffs in a conference call with reporters, saying they "adversely impact people's lives, but in this case, they are absolutely critical to the long-term health of the company."

In a note to clients, research firm Ovum wrote "HP's restructuring is painful but necessary in order to restore market and customer confidence after two years of turmoil. What's somewhat encouraging is HP's indication that most restructuring savings will be directed toward R&D ? a part of HP's legacy and history which the company has sorely undervalued in the past few years, but which will be a critical component of HP's recovery in new product and service development?the key missing piece is [Whitman's] long-term company vision and strategy, which hopefully will be revealed to an anxious customer base soon. Even with this restructuring, the question still remains: Just what kind of company does HP want to be next year, three years, five years from now?"

Analysts and industry insiders have noticed the new direction Whitman has taken the company in the few months since she took over at H-P. She jettisoned the company's plan to spin off its PC business, an idea heavily promoted by her predecessor, former CEO Leo Apotheker. The ultimate question centers on whether she can stabilize the company and steer it from a staid computer maker back into the technology behemoth that it was.

As Aaron Task and Jeff Macke point out in the accompanying video, H-P has been in a 10-year slump. Earnings are shrinking, margins are down and the company is positioned poorly compared to its competitors. Whitman may be the last chance for H-P to reverse its downward trajectory.

"They're moving forward as opposed to trying to maintain this dominance," Macke says. "We've gotten rid of all the legacy on the board. We have grown up management now."
